I played through this game once, but I can see how it would have good replay value. Reminded me of the original Gabriel Knight game, but with a panoply of magic and a diverse team of shadow hunters. Also has some light RPG elements and player-choice branching narratives, which pay off nicely in the end. Unlike some player-choice games, I actually felt rewarded for my "good" choices here, "good" in quotes because the in-game morality is very nuanced, so right and wrong are not obvious. Unavowed has an interesting cast of characters, with solid writing and voice acting. The gameplay is a bit episodic, but each episode/quest tells its own story, so it doesn't get repetitive. I definitely recommend this title to fans of narrative adventure games.
Such a compelling story, and great , interesting characters. I really enjoy interacting with them. Superb voice acting, great but not too hard puzzles. This might be Wadjeteyes best adventure. Clever UI too, fabulous artwork, and both funny and intriguing.
I really loved this game. Some moments are absolutely memorable, mechanics are fun and enrich the narrative, some characters are great, the story is solid, and puzzles are good. And still there is room for improvement.
At the beginning I had some reserves around the protagonist, but then the story picks up.
Some companion characters are unique (logan and kaykay absolutely the best), while others are a bit more bland, still each one of them has its own mechanic and sketched personality and the interactions are just always very good.
Im now officially a fan of widgeteye's games. There must be something in the surname Gilbert.
I am just a little bit fed up with the always minimalistic UI. but it is hardly the game's fault, since for some reason this is still the go-to marketing decision of every modern point and click adventure
I really do not like point and click games
I do not hate them. But "point-and-click game logic" always annoy me. It is not a matter of thinking outside of the box but it just usually resolves with me just throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks.
Either that or look at a walkthrough..
That said, I wish point and click games did not use their absurdist logic because some of the BEST narratives are found in point and click games.
"Unavowed" is a good example of some of the best writing I have seen in YEARS.
Deep, complex characters with deep complex relationship and motivations. Fantastic plot twists that you do not see coming. An intensely dark, mature and SUBTLE storyline that had my mouth agape more than a few time throughout the game.
I was hooked from the very beginning; and in all fairness, it did not have too much point-and-click game logic. I just ALWAYS get annoyed when I get stuck and have to go to a walkthrough because I REALLY want to find out what happens next in the narrative.
Anyway, I hightly recommend this game just on the story alone.
Unavowed is a great ride and exactly what I want out of an adventure game. Even going in with high expectations, I was surprised just how invested I became in the story and how attached I became to my little scooby gang.
You play a character who has forgotten the last year after being possessed by a demon. As the story progresses you must retrace your steps, figuring out what your mental joyrider was doing all that time. It's set in the same universe as the Blackwell series and there are some nods that fans will appreciate, but it's a welcoming entry point for newcomers.
The game is mostly broken into episodic cases. This helps make both the story and its puzzles bite-sized. While Unavowed was to some extent one of those games I had trouble putting down, the episodic structure makes for clean stopping points that made it a little easier to call it a night, which I appreciated.
Speaking of puzzles, be aware they serve the story, not the other way around. That's the way I like it, and if story is king for you too, Unavowed is highly recommended. However, if you are hoping for riddles and brain teasers you may be disappointed. There IS a little of that classic adventure game sensibility here - instances where you have to connect several dots or find hidden meaning. And even in Unavowed, you are still going to be best off picking up anything that isn't nailed down. However, the majority of the "puzzles" boil down to figuring out the next logical step in the story.
The music and 2D art are beautiful and really give the world its own feel. Voice acting is mostly top notch, and even the lesser performances are still decent.
If you're familiar with genre fiction there may not be too many surprises in Unavowed's twists and turns. However, the execution is solid and many of the characters are compelling and memorable. I'd highly recommend it to urban fantasy fans and, really, to any story-focused player.
