Entertaining, but has many problems

I finished it on normal before reviewing. I don't recommend starting on hard because you'll easily get starved out of ammo if you don't know where you're going. Description: FPS game where you play as a native american in a SF setting, shooting at dinosaurs, aliens and robots. Aside from typical shooter elements this game also has a lot of platforming and item collection as you need to find keys to new levels, which are usually hidden behind some basic exploration. This game operates on a lives system like old platform and arcade games where you collect lives by finding enough of special objects (points?). If you die you can continue from last checkpoint or you can reload the game from last save point. Pros: + Large weapon arsenal You start with a knife and bow, grabbing a pistol in first few moments. There are also pump and auto shotguns, assault rifle, grenade and rocket launchers, minigun and a total of 5 different energy weapons, one of them being ultimate 'nuke' type weapon and one more being a secret 'even bigger nuke' weapon. Some weapons can use alternative ammo too. + Animations Enemies tend to die in a nice fashion. Especially some bigger bad guys will roll around spewing blood etc. + Most levels Fun to explore, interesting layouts, every level has it's own 'feel'. Cons: - Last level Long, boring, filled with annoyingly tough enemies, douchebag placement of instant-death pits, etc. Also confusing to navigate. - Instant death pits Falling into an endless pit takes away a life instantly, but most importantly - also takes away the best powerup in the game - ammo backpack - Ammo capacity Very low unless you find an ammo backpack, which as explained before - can be lost upon death. Lowdown I've played a lot of Turok 2 waaaay back when PC version released, but never experienced the original. I'm glad I played it, but I'm aslo a bit disappointed in the end. I recommend in mildly, but Turok 2 is a superior game in every way.

Dla przypomnienia i postrzelania sobie

Warto wrócić do tej gry aby postrzelać zwyczajnie, czy przypomnieć sobie standardy jakie wówczas w strzelaninach panowały, O dziwo parę elementów wykorzystuje się w grach tego typu do teraz. Ja lubiłem bardzo Turoka na leciwym sprzęcie pamiętający jeszcze Windows 95 lubię i teraz a że został przyzwyczajony do dzisiejszych realiów to dla mnie dobra wiadomość.

The design aged poorly

Perhaps back in its day it was interesting, but nowadays it falls short on many levels. First of all, there is no explanation at all who you are and what you are doing. I know this game is based on a comic book, but I dont know nothing beyond that. It takes away from the setting as I have no context for what is happening. Not even environmental storytelling. The environment and sound part are alright for a game its age, nothing more. That leaves only the gameplay to carry this title. It has mainly 2 sides to it. The combat and traversal/platforming. I didnt play too long, but the combat wasnt particularly satisfying. The fighting areas were usually small and narrow and even when you were in larger areas you could usually knock the enemies out before they noticed you. Enemies also constantly respawn, which forces you to keep moving, since otherwise they will consume your ammo. This makes it difficult to properly search through areas and navigate levels. Since this was designed as a console game it incorporates a fair bit of traversal mechanics you could see in platformers. Jumping through obstacles, climbing walls, finding hidden paths. They are fine, but usually simple and given all the previously mentioned shortcomings, dont really do anything to elevate the game. There is also a system of upgrades and you can gather collectibles that adds lives. But the final straw in all of this is the level design. It is pretty long and often confusing. In order to progress you need to find key fragments in different levels to unlock further levels. I usually try to check everything, but when I saw I missed a certain fragment and that meant going through the level again from the beginning I knew I needed to have good long thought of whether it is worth it. And as it turns out, it really isnt. I think this title was fine as a console game way back in its day, but today it falls short in too many areas. You are much better off trying out other games.

Turok-recenzja

Turok to pierwszoosobowa strzelanka o bardzo specyficznym klimacie łączącym dinozaury, sci-fi, potwory niemal fantastyczne oraz z jakiegoś powodu indianina. Grę da się przejść 7-8 godzin co jest dosyć przystępnym czasem. Oprawa audiowizualna choć postarzała nie trąci bardzo. Gameplayowo nie jest źle. Jest to arcadowa pierwszoosobowa strzelanka w której przechodzimy mapy szukając odpowiednich kluczy oraz pokonując bossów. Gra oferuje duży asortyment broni, z których każda działa nieco inaczej i przydaje się w innych sytuacjach, a dobrze rozłożona amunicja zachęca do wypróbowania każdej z nich. Przeciwników jest całkiem dużo i na przestrzeni rozgrywki cały czas są rzucani nowi. Bossowie nie są specjalnie trudni, ale nie nazwałbym ich łatwymi. Największymi minusami są dla mnie całkiem duża ilość elementów platformowych (jak ja ich nie lubię w tego typu strzelankach) oraz ułożenie niektórych kluczy (potrafią być ułożone w naprawdę trudnych do dotarcia miejscach jakby to były jakieś easter eggi, a elementy wymagane do przejścia gry). Ogólnie jest to przystępna gra. Jeśli lubisz tego typu stare strzelanki polecam zagrać.

Definitive version of an N64 shooter.

This is an old-school shooter through and through. You move at 50 miles an hour, collect keys and shoot whatever's in the way. One can feel that it was originally made for a console in that it's overall relatively easy on Mouse and Keyboard, but it's still a fun playthrough.
