Now only fun with friends
I like this game even as single player, but the open space makes it less tactical than the old Rainbow Six games. This game is more about camping snipers, which was fun with friends. Now I would recommend the ARMA franchise for those who prefer realistic single player action.

Great game of my childhood
Great unforgiving tactical game, with great visuals and especially sound when it was released. I do hope Desert Siege and Island Thunder expansions will be available on GOG.

Shooter, but shooting is just game/2
You and your team against Soviet - ahem - russian commies. The game is good mix of shooting+commanding & tactical thinking+cooperation with allies (not under your command)+character developement (each survivor will get one point at the end of the mission)+where-did-that-sucker-come-from-oh-damn-I'm-dead-again. At release time, state of the art. Today, you'll find that AI is a bit dumb, your mates will block you doors or they get caught in stairs (no kidding), sometimes, despite having orders, they just stay where they are. It seems impossible to issue commands at one-person-only-level (quicksave is your best friend), neither I found out way to make other squads simply follow player's one. Solid 4,5*. The only thing missing is five more humans to play campaign with.

a great classic war game, the intense feeling of being taken out is always on your mind, all it takes is a pop and you are down, and it really makes you want to try again, try a different route or maybe a different weapon or specialist, this game really is a Gem, I miss the days of computer games like this, PC games will never be the same again so grab it and enjoy the heck out of it!!!!!! Runs great on my up to date system!

Immersive small unit action
Ghost Recon is a squad shooter that allows the player to control several elements to solve tactical problems. The assistance of the AI fire teams is often useful as the opposing forces outnumber the player side by a wide margin and have the unforgiving competence of opponents in the golden era of Red Storm Entertainment games. It incorporates a RPG element by awarding points to team members surviving missions that can then be used to improve the stats of the unit, though the gradual addition of hero characters with higher skill levels will often lead players to ditch the regular grunts as the campaign progresses. The game excels in the art work and atmosphere. The opponents are diverse, showcasing the vast array of different uniforms and camouflage patterns that were used by Russian forces at the time of release. This attention to detail significantly aids immersion, as the cookie cutter effect present in many older shooters is avoided.. It also features vegetation that moves in the wind, and there will be occasions when one is nervous enough to open fire on trees and bushes that are mistaken for lurking enemies. A drawback of the GOG release is the absence of the two sequels that moved the action to a desert and jungle environment. Owners of the original disks can install them with the GOG base game without problems though. Here's hoping GOG will acquire the rights to Desert Siege and Island Thunder to cater to other players, as the Ghost Recon campaign will undoubtedly thirst for more.
