Surprisingly good

As an avid Unreal fan I hadn't heard of this one Uengine 1.0 game before and I am pleasantly surprised by it, it looks great, BSP holes and all, great texture work, it's always fun for me to explore these Uengine games and look at the many different ways people worked with this engine in contrast to Unreal which I am knowledgeable in. (This game has working ladders and many things Unreal never had). All Unreal commands work in the console, I recommend playing 1080p. Higher resolutions it's difficult to see the UI. There's even a couple of points you can reliably cause a GPF error so you know its 100% unreal. You have tons of air control too compared to UT or Unreal so moving and dodging is super easy, in fact some enemies dodge just like the Krall from Unreal. The story is a bit mediocre, to avoid wheel of time nomenclature you're basically a powerful sorceress who can change weapons/spells using the 1-9 keys, there's healing, fireball (eightball/rocket launcher/your no.1 spell) and levitation and other cool stuff, it feels very 90's. It's actually pretty decent, unfortunately some spells give zero description as to what they actually do, even after testing I'm left scratching my head, there's AI spell casters and a lot of the time I have zero clue what they are casting or doing but it hurts a lot. unfortunately for all your strength and potency while playing as this character, during cutscenes you are still backhanded 1950's style into a cowering state onto the floor by one of the main villains...yeah I don't think much of the story, long cutscenes...extensive albeit competent voiceacting...massive exposition dumps... It's charming at first but it really will depend on your mood. From an Unreal fan perspective I thought this was really cool, but there were a couple of maps I got fed up with, so I just typed ghost (then 'walk' to walk..) into the console, picked up all the items and found the exit.

NOT a hidden gem, but still interesting

There are several things interresting about this game. First, a FPS in a fantasy setting is pretty rare. The spells (artifacts) come rich in variety, the gothic style of the buildings is neat, I liked the heroine and didn't expect this kind of horrific atmosphere with some scary monsters. Having said that, the mix doesn't make up for a good enough coktail. The ennemies and leveldesign of the single player are meh, and something is off about the rythm. The Wheel of Time reproduce the fast FPS formula, but this formula doesn't fit as well when you have a dozen or more spells to choose from at any given time. It's messy and not great from a gaming perspective.

Superb atmosphere!

TLDR: Charming game. Great music. Beautiful levels that have aged reasonably both design wise and visually. Not bad shooting. The combat is interesting. You mostly use spells that could be standard reskinned FPS weapons (dart and fireball) but it tries to shake it up with many unique options. "Ammo" conservation is quite important, be judicious. Many enemies input read you and dodges shots directly aimed at them, but it is probably needed to make some of the basic enemies keep you on your toes. I found that the best way to deal with the magic using enemies was to cheese them because it can be hard to pick the right spells to counter them. Why think so hard when you can conserve freeze spell for them and ambush them with it? Partly, it's because of how you can get killed really easily by magic users (you can absolutely do the same to them in exchange). I have heard that the tower defense elements in the tutorial and the tactics of using spells really come into their own in multiplayer, which I haven't tried yet. The levels are medium sized and well designed. This is mostly a linear game with occasional backtracking. Some of the levels are really fun to explore and connect areas to each other nicely. It doesn't hurt that most look great and the game doesn't hesitate to use striking, bold colours. The puzzle level in between is a bit of a speedbump (sometimes it was not clear to me that something was a breakable item, so I got stuck for some time). I actually think most of the puzzles in the game are good middle ground between obscure and modern AAA crap. As for the story, I will confess that I have no idea about the universe and I don't really care too much! It's not terrible. It feels like each level has around 4 or 5 minutes of cutscenes total, usually playing after you end the level. Nothing too special and the FMVs have not aged as well as the game itself. I would like to reiterate that the music is great! In case you missed that from the first line.

Hard to love

I went through until "Mission 5: Saving the White Tower". I hate this game. Perhaps it's different if you have invested in reading all of the many tomes of this mega novel. But I can confidently put this in "Licensed Game" territory. I don't think I will attempt this one again.
