The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak includes:

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak (Base Game)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak - Free Sample Set

After the war, Calvard is enjoying unprecedented economic prosperity. However, the public grows uncertain as the number of immigrants increases and political reform runs rampant. Follow Van, a young man and local spriggan, on a unique request that will prove more than he bargained for. Will the nation fall into chaos?

The AT (Action Time) battle command has been completely revamped transitioning seamlessly from field battles to turn-based combat. The sixth-generation tactical orbment Xipha offers a revolutionary combat experience unique to this iteration of the Trails series!

In addition, the Topic System allows players to gain an advantage in battle by using conversation topics as bargaining chips. These topics can be obtained by interacting with other characters throughout the city. The game also features the Alignment system, which allows players to change their character’s three unique attributes and influence characteristics such as their status, the forces they fight with (or against), and even how the plot unfolds.

Dive into the dynamic adventure in "Trails through Daybreak!"

About

The spriggan's life is but one of many professions that has emerged from the Calvard Republic. Be it playing detective, negotiator, or bounty hunter, Van Arkride takes on the kind of work that can't be taken to more legitimate sources. It could be something the police can't handle, work that's best left out of the public eye, or even a request from a criminal of organization in the underworld; so long as it pays and doesn't cross too far over the gray line, he'll accept near-any job that comes across his table.

The year is 1208. A prim-and-proper young lady dressed in the uniform of an esteemed academy visits a dilapidated, multi-tenant building in a downtown district of Edith, the nation's capital. With a most dignified gaze, she looks upon the plague of the door before her. It reads: 'ARKRIDE Solutions Office: Complicated Matters Only.'

Steeling herself, she knocks on the door three times.

"First thing in the morning...?" a relaxed yet surprisingly young voice grumbles with a yawn.

From the moment he opens the door to greet her, a new tale begins.

New Country, New Style

Trails Through Daybreak, like Cold Steel before it, represents a drastic shift in gameplay style, with a simplification of mechanics to make it more easy accessible to people who are new to the series or RPGs in general. This has been a trend followed by many RPGs in the last few years, but, unlike the recent entries in the Final Fantasy series, which have been simplified to a degree that can make combat feel more dumbed-down than streamlined, the new style of combat in Daybreak is more geared towards keeping dungeons flowing quickly once the player feels they've done enough leveling. If you think fighting a low level enemy would take too long for the rewards it would give, just attack it on the overworld a few times to make it go away. If things get too tough, just press one button and fights shift over to turn-based style so you can plan ahead and use spells/crafts. I've heard a few complaints that this can make the game a bit too easy at times, which can be true, but I've played enough Trails games to know that the first entry in a new arc tends to ease players into the flow of combat before ramping up difficulty in the sequel. As for the writing, Daybreak has a cast that made a much more positive first impression on me that any previous cast has, even going back to the very first Trails in the Sky game. Toneally, it is much more serious than the Cold Steel arc which, while very good, especially towards the end of CS4, tended to be a bit more cutesy than I would like out of a fairly serious political drama. Instead, the style of writing is much more in line with the Crossbell arc, with much more parallels to current real-world issues presented with more gravitas. Again, to contrast with Cold Steel, there is no fascism monster that makes people magically turn into nationalists and stops when you hit it with a sword. Now, it's just people and systems being flawed and the characters trapped in those systems doing their best to deal with it. Great entry in the series

Very good initial impression

I haven't played long yet, but this game has a lot going for it. Characters that aren't annoying, it has an interesting combat system, it looks good while being easy to run, tons of options for graphics settings that are well explained and let me preview the changes, ultrawide support, a good deal of quality of life features, the ability to save at any time (thank you for respecting my time) and some other features I know I'm forgetting. I can't say much for the story since I am still early in the game, but as far as the game alone, it is impressive. It's also nice not feeling like I'm constantly on the clock and being rushed to the endpoint like I was with the Persona games and Metaphor, which were the other more recent JRPG's I've played, although I have played plenty of others, just not recently. So far this game feels like it takes most of the things I like from other JRPG's and also fixes a lot of the issues I have with those same games. This is my first Trails game, so take that how you will. I'm giving it a 4/5 only because I don't know yet if i will really get pulled in by the story, just like how I lost steam on Metaphor towards the end and still haven't finished that game, but aside from that it's great. If GoG lets me update reviews (I read it might not), I'll come back later and if I liked the story bump it to a 5/5.

Very Solid

This is my favorite RPG series. And this is the start of a new story arc in it. It took me some time to warm up to the new cast but eventually did. They are a cool group of new characters. Combat has been changed changed with more action options prior to initiating turn based battles. It's fine but am not sure its better than what they had before. The game is long. Probably 60 hours even if you skip many side quests. I wish it had more voice acting. It's very sparse and weird how 5 people can be talking and only 1 of them will be voiced. It's also odd how for an Eastern (Asian) country the announcements have a french accent. But the game is good. The protagonist is more rough around the edged and less of a goody two shoes than normal and it's a refreshing take on the formula. Looking forward to what comes next.

A good game, but not a good Trails

Kuro no Kiseki is a weird beast: it discards most of what was built in the previous 10 games, and tells a self-contained story that might as well be part of a different series. Which is not necessarily bad, just...play it with an open mind. It is the easiest way to get the most out of it. Anyway, the format is identical to all other games in the series: enter new area => discover evil machination => solve crysis => next chapter => move to new location. It still works, but there is a bit too much magic involved. Stuff happens, but it feels too random and inexplicable to have a real impact on the player. You just learn to accept it, and move on. In general, I think that Trails games have always struggled when it comes to tackling complex themes, and in this game the approach that was chosen is particularly shallow. The racism issue, that is repeatedly said to be a massive problem in the Republic of Calvard, is only tangentially relevant in a single chapter, and then gets promply forgotten for the rest of the game. If it leads nowhere, then what was the point of it beyond a generic "racism is bad"? I feel this needs to be mentioned again: the Kiseki world really runs on magic. I blame Cold Steel 4 for this trend, because we've come to a point where magic deprives characters of agency. Despite the game telling you otherwise, magic is ultimately the root of all problems, and breaking the latest curse is always the most optimal solution. Which would be fine for an unrelated title, but it is inacceptable in a long running series. Kuro no Kiseki is a good game. Just a bad Trails game.
