Flawed but overall recommended

I agree with every negative point brought up in the other reviews, but I still basically recommend this game. The gameplay is very flawed and a lot about the game's design is clumsy, but never in a way that's obnoxious or detracts from the enjoyable stuff, which is the atmosphere and the story. First off: this is an adventure game. The genres here list "action", and the screenshots might make it look like an action platformer, but this is a pure adventure game. There's shooting in it, but it acts more like a minigame than actual action gameplay. Furthermore, the puzzles in this adventure game are so easy that the game is almost verging towards being a walking simulator. Actually, some of the puzzles are a bit moon-logicky, but the game world is so small that you can always get through them by just using everything on everything. Really you're here for the atmosphere and the fully voice-acted story. If you like a strong story with very light gameplay, you might enjoy this. Other people are complaining the game is short or doesn't have a complete story. I don't see the problem. I couldn't finish this game in one sitting (I finished it in two days), and I feel like the game has a self-contained story. It technically ends on a cliff-hanger, but you get closure on the important stuff, and I don't feel the need to play the sequel to feel like I got a complete story. Some people are complaining about the controls. The controls are definitely a little over-complicated (why do I have to switch the between "walk around", "interact", and "shoot" modes when interacting and shooting are already two different buttons? And how come the controls to switch between those modes are spread across two different buttons on the controller?), but at least with a controller it's not a problem, just a little baffling. There is a pretty inexcusable bug in the Linux version: if you unplug and reconnect a controller during gameplay, the game instantly crashes to desktop.

Fun story and experience!

Nice dystopian storyline! I was not quite sure what to expect when I first started playing this game but I was pleasantly surprised. It is a side scrolling game that employs easy to learn mechanics as you: - Search the environment for clues - Solve puzzles - Play minigames - neutralize/avoid bad guys There is some lack of polish in the action scenes but its pretty much like any old side scroller fighting game in that regard, all about the timing. I liked the story arc and the way they dropped subtle/not so subtle clues about your character's background and the world around you. It is a quick game to finish and I bought the sequel right away.

Really good game

This game was really interesting, fantastic plot. the only reason i give it 4/5 is that the controls are a bit janky and sometimes its really not obvious what you have to do next. I still played it all in a day though!

Play a Combat Machine Who Fights Poorly

In The Fall, you're a combat suit that was thrown into a mysterious complex and who is trying to save your operator. The game's style resembles a point and click adventure game with some combat elements. PROS: + Good graphics, voice acting, and sound. + Creepy atmosphere. + Engaging story. CONS: - Bad controls. - Problems with ridiculous solutions. The levels are creepy and engaging with graphics and sounds that match them. Also, the story makes you want to continue playing to find out about what happened at the complex, whether or not you will save your operator, and whether or not you're functioning as intended. On the other hand, the controls in the game are very poorly designed. Among other problems, using cover during combat is quite confusing and switching between walking, searching, and shooting is a hassle. However, the enemies are weak, dying isn't a major setback, and you get used to the control issues. Furthermore, like any point and click adventure game, there are problems that have ridiculous solutions. For example, in order to silence a (fake) crying baby, you need to move a pipe over it (via an unrelated event) and then fail a different test in order to suck it into the pipe. The story, atmosphere, graphics, and sound made this game worth playing. However, I'm glad that I used a walkthrough when I got stuck instead of wasting too much time on a trial and error approach that would have taken far too long.
