Antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows of England, documenting the treasures she finds buried within. When an intriguing letter summons her to the small village of Bewlay, tucked away in the remote countryside, she sets off by train with her assistant a day behind.
Upon her arrival, however, the mysterious man who summoned her is nowhere to be found. Her assistant never arrives. A stubborn landowner refuses access to the barrow, and the locals are wary of this woman who is traveling alone and (gasp!) wears trousers.
The excavation of Hob’s Barrow is off to a rocky start. And then Thomasina starts having strange dreams…
A dark, complex and evolving storyline featuring interwoven elements from real English folklore.
Traditional point and click adventure game puzzles and interactions, with an easy modern interface.
A cast of intriguing characters, from suspicious villagers to sickly vicars to lordly landowners, all with their own unique stories and motives.
A distinct folk horror tone and grounding.
Evocative pixel-art graphics, featuring cut-scenes and engaging animations.
A suitably atmospheric original soundtrack from The Machine. The Demon. - one half of the duo behind the award-winning "Football Game" soundtrack.
Fiends in the furrows, the smell of damp soil, and a cat or two.
Hob’s Barrow is a short mystical tale for in between. The characters and dialogues are convincing, and the distinctive dialect is a pleasure to listen to. The locations are charming, and the puzzles are logical and not difficult.
In my opinion, the story itself is told a little too indirectly. The protagonist’s journal entries give too much of the story away, giving the impression that you are following a predetermined path, which takes away from the feeling of actually being on a mystical journey of discovery.
That aside, the story is moving enough to linger in your mind for a while, and I enjoyed playing through Hob’s Barrow.
A very classic point and click game with an intruging storyline. You play as a barrow digger Thomasina Bateman, a grave digger archeologist basically, trying to find and excavate Hob's Barrow. However, this will be easier said than done... Known to be a local landmark, some of the locals seem to never have heard of it while others won't talk much of it... A darker adventure game for those looking for some suspense and mystery.
You'll have to do all the classic fun point and click adventure stuff. Talking to interesting characters, collecting items and using them creatively. A strong point of the game is that the puzzles are logical and well thought out and the game will sometimes surprise you with what you think will be a simple solution that just requires a bit more thinking.
All in all, a very worthwhile adventure game for people who like adventures with a darker atmosphere.
The graphics, the story, the characters and setting are all great. Some funny scenes/jokes in there too. Also fantastic voice acting by Samantha Béart (Karlach) amongst others.
Only drawback is that it is very short and the first two chapters are better than the third. I would have liked spending some more time exploring and conversing with the characters.
As a long-time point and click enthusiast AND enjoyer of spooky stories, I have to say. They knocked it out of the park on this one.
Delightfully creepy and atmospheric. If you're a fan of Lovecraftian horror, you will find something to like here.
I've been returning to a genre I loved from childhood as of late, the humble point-and-click games. I briefly dipped my toe back in to the pool in 2009-ish, playing the Blackwell games, Darkfall, Momento Mori (nobody seems to talk about that one nowadays), and the Dracula series. Of those games, I thought the Blackwell ones had a certain naive charm that stuck with me.
Skip to a few weeks ago and I've started going down the Point-and-click rabbit hole once again. I've been reading alot of threads about Wadjet Eye Games - the makers of Blackwell - and I was familiar with Gemini Rue and Shardlight, but, holy cow, have they come on leaps and bounds since the Blackwell days! I've bought nearly all of their catalogue.
I was waiting for this one to come on offer, as it had a distinct charm about it that stood out as a little odd and off kilter.
I will not spoil any of the story, but I want to touch on a few points. The game is a masterpiece. Beautiful voice-acting that could have been lifted straight out of a high budget TV show, very beautiful, strange, well animated pixel-art, but above all the story. It is truly unique and intriguing.
The whole atmosphere of this game conjures an infectious portal into the strange world of English mythology. Barrows are mysterious things, almost like crypts or pyramids full of secret treasure, and this game covers this topic in a very organic way.
The characters are deep and humanly flawed and there are some very interesting scenes going back to the protagonist's childhood.
This game is breathtaking. A true piece of art that I would recommend to anyone, whether they enjoy the genre or not. 10/10!
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
