Opis

The Complete Season of The Council grants you access to all 5 episodes.

The Council is an episodic game like no other. Delivering a fresh new take on the Narrative Adventure, your choices and character growth truly matter. Make hard-hitting decisions, but also develop an array of skills to directly impact how the story unfolds. With permanent, long-lasting consequences, there is no going back. Plunge into a tale of intrigue and manipulation in the style of a classic murder mystery, living with a cast of alluring characters each hiding their own dark secrets. Trust no one while uncovering dire truths – no matter the cost to mind and body.

The Council begins in 1793, with players taking the role of secret society member Louis de Richet after his invitation to a private island off the shores of England by the enigmatic Lord Mortimer. Joining him are a number of high profile guests, including Napoleon Bonaparte and President of the newly-formed United States of America, George Washington. The strange nature of this private reception goes beyond just the prestigious guests –Richet’s own mother has recently gone missing on the island, while each and every one of the colorful cast seems to have their own hidden agendas.

In a new twist for the genre, the core of The Council’s gameplay comes from manipulating and maneuvering through character encounters using the unique Social Influence system. During confrontations, skills and limited resources can be used to gain the upper hand and achieve the desired outcome. Players will be rewarded for their knowledge of each character’s psychological vulnerabilities and immunities, as well as their preparations made during prior exploration and investigation. Failing an encounter does not mean ‘game over’, and no action can be taken back. The consequences are permanent, and may result in persistent physical disfigurements or mental traits that help or hinder the rest of the player’s adventure.

Richet’s numerous skills can be developed to align with your chosen approach to the adventure. Solve issues with diplomacy, delve into occultism to expand your historical and scientific knowledge, or play detective and see what others do not perceive. Your skills will have uses that extend far beyond your conversations with fellow guests. With 15 diverse skills to use and invest in, players are free to uncover The Council’s mysteries how they see fit, with wildly varying consequences depending on their methods. The results will forever alter the life of Louis de Richet, of those around him, and shape history as we know it.

Narrative Adventure That's Also a Game

Basically, this is the kind of game that Telltale would like everyone to believe they made - basically an adventure game with great graphics, interesting plot, and multiple choices that actually matter (in that they can significantly change the way the game plays out, and not just one or two minor things). So it's in effect a graphical adventure with "puzzles" generally consisting of choosing what to say in dialogues, looking for items to use (and then using them), or using your skills (in dialogue, to solve puzzles or just to "notice" things in what the game calls "opportunities" - which unfortunately only require you to click on an obvious point on the screen before the generous timer expires). Yes, "skills": these are the RPG mechanics in the game. Near the start of the game, you choose your "class" (diplomat, investigator or occultist), and this changes how the game plays out - at least in theory. Only the skills that you have may be used, and your class gives you about a third of them. You have a pool of "effort points", and using skills uses those points. Unfortunately the RPG mechanics start to feel a bit half-assed almost immediately. It doesn't take long before you have all the skills, which means all skills will be available to use whenever they pop up (the only locking of options is whether you have the skill or not - the actual level only decreases the "cost" of the skill). There are an abundance of consumables, they're easy to find, so running out of effort points rarely happens, so these mechanics lose their significance quite quickly. That said - there are not only multiple possible endings, there are also multiple paths, some of which significantly change how things play out. There are also actual puzzles in the game, which require some thought (although they can be failed with interesting results). Apart from the awful final chapter, this game would be an instant classic - despite this, I recommend this for any (narrative) adventure or RPG fan.

Unskippable cutscenes, no manual saves

When I play games like this, I like to be able to explore the different options. The game basically begs you to do so by telling you about the alternative routes you've missed at the end of each chapters. BUT when you do try to replay an episode for the alternative routes... you have to sit through hours of unskippable cutscenes and dialogues that you've already seen before! You can't even save the game manually before choosing between the alternative paths. The game only has one autosave per profile. If you want to see the alternative path in a chapter, you have to replay the whole thing from the start. To make matters worse, the game doesn't make it clear which areas you can't revisit, or what events automatically block you out from other content. You know those options in all the RPGs that say "give me a moment to get ready"? They are severely lacking in this game. You walk into the wrong door, or talk to the wrong person first, then forget about exploring the rest of the content... that is, unless you want to restart the chapter and sit through all the unskippable cutscenes and dialogues again. These design choices are so baffling that I cannot recommend the game until they are changed. Unless you are the type of person who feels fine missing out on large portions of the game, or has the time and patience to sit through the same cutscenes and dialogues multiple times.

11/10 game but the ending

It's an amazing game, love the adventure, love the system where you can invest your skills like you please, and move fordward in different ways, depending on your type of character. The story is also great and intriguing. The main issue I got of the game is with the 2 final chapters, mostly the last one and the ending, seems a rushed ending, and that the people tells you the entire story to get to the end insted of being your character the one that finds out. The ending it's also too grandiose and feels like there's little build up for it, like I said, they have to tell you and explain it to you and everything changes with just a few lines of dialogue. I hope they release another game, but more down to earth for the ending.

Good, but not great

The game structure itself is one I enjoy, narrative focus with rich storyline. The period setting also adds much to the game's overall appeal, with few games being set in the late 18th century. The dialogue and characters are fully developed as well. Sadly, my problems with this title have more to do with technical aspects. The sound cut out frequently during the dialogue, which broke much of the immersion that could have otherwise provided a more rich game experience. Plus, the voices did not seem particularly well cast, which also had a jarring effect. The main character's mother, in the opening scenes, sounded about a generation or two too young for the character she was portraying. The main character did not sound very period, with a strong contemporary dialect which left me wanting more. It's a decent game in its own right, with expansive options based on in-game choices, but I feel as though the technical aspects kept me from full immersion, which is critical in a game such as this. Good, but not great.

Outstanding Narrative Title

So, this game is the type of game that I love. Heavy on the store, heavy on the multiple choice dialog (like.. mass effect, witcher, skyrim, any of those games) and light on mechanics. It is all about the story and the narrative. Telltale games, even visual novels; this game is like that. So if you're going in to it with the expectation that you're going to be playing a platforming adventure like Tomb Raider, or Uncharted... you'll be disappointed. But if you're like me, and you love a narrative, choices matter, story driven game? This is amazing. I loved every second of this game, and every little twist and turn in it. It does have some puzzles, and there are multiple endings and paths to take to those endings. Enjoy.
