The term "roguelike" is frequently and often incorrectly applied to any game that has procedurally generated content. Tangledeep is a true roguelike, however, in that its core gameplay is directly descended from other true roguelikes of the past: Rogue (the OG), Hack/Nethack, Moria/Angband, and so on. If you've played any of those, you know what to expect in Tangledeep.
What makes Tangledeep different is that they've added some JRPG features and styling to the core roguelike gameplay. That might sound appealing, and it makes for a pretty trailer, but the reality is shallow and disappointing. You can fight bosses! But there are only six of them. You can do quests! But they're XP/JP/GP giveaways irrelevant to the story (such as it is). Your character can change jobs and then mix-and-match job abilities! But each job can be mastered in just a few character levels. You can capture pets! But those pets simply follow you around. You can craft meals for healing and buffing! But most of the meals either don't scale or are useless to your play style.
But what really aggravates me, as a veteran player of Moria/Angband, is that while Tangledeep's floors are indeed procedurally generated, they're tiny, cluttered, and permanent. The monsters respawn, but the treasures and resources do not, so you get neither the satisfaction of clearing an existing floor nor the option to generate a new one. I understand that such permanence is supposed to make you feel like you're exploring a real, living place, and you're journeying through this wilderness from one boss fight to the next, but… it's just so tedious. (There are no Angband-style vaults here. IYKYK.)
You must grind between boss fights, either for equipment to fit the job you have or for job points to fit the equipment you have. That's part of the gameplay in both roguelikes and JRPGs, and that's fine. But if you must grind, then you also must be able to enter a flow state that makes such grinding enjoyable, and Tangledeep simply does not allow that. It's just too cluttered and clunky.
By the time you're about halfway through the game, you get the feeling that the developers added all those JRPG features just so they can say that they did, not because they actually make the game fun. Read the description again, with that in mind, and you'll see what I mean.
After playing an hour, I didn't find anything that could make me return to the game. It is extremely boring, doesn't have enough depth to catch my attention. I created Edge Thane character and gameplay consisted of constantly pressing forward arrow on gamepad to kill an enemy. Sometimes I had to press Y and select health potion. I made it to level 5 of dungeon and just dropped. I didn't like in-game texts, as for me they are too childish for rogue-like game (but what a schoolboy will calculate all that RPG stats?) Let's make friends with wild beasts? Serious? Stats itself don't play major role, at least I didn't see much influence during my playthrough. Just maximize Strength/Guile and that is it. Maybe I am missing something, but after Wizardry 8, Baldur's Gate, ADOM and other real RPGs, Tangledeep is really boring.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
