+ unique, interesting characters and world
+ relaxing music and atmosphere
+ pixel graphics, but not too rough
+ clever and intuitive inventory system
+ easily READABLE fonts! A big deal for me, many games get this wrong
+ possibility of a mobile port
+ you can capture monsters and befriend with them (to use them as pets) - heartwarming ;)
+ daily/weekly challenges
In overall, a pleasant game, with unique characters and with a sense of adventure.
Also, quite casual friendly (see the descriptions of different game modes in other reviews).
You should give it a chance, it is definitely worth the full price!
The art style and music are both fantastic, and I enjoyed it a lot on my first run.
But the gameplay became repetitive after that, because the dungeon is not randomly generated and the main storyline is the same old.
There will be deja-vu here and there after your first run. But in overall, this is a quality rouguelike/hack and slash game.
Tangledeep is easily one of the best roguelike games I've played, up there with the likes of Tales of Maj'Eyal, Caves of Qud, Brogue, and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. But if you're new to the genre that doesn't matter much. What you need to know is that this is probably the best place to start if you're interested in the roguelike genre.
First the aesthetics: it has fantastic 16-bit-like JRPG graphics in the style of Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger. The music, which echoes that same era, is brilliant and even features music from Grant Kirkhope (Donkey Kong 64, Desktop Dungeons), Hiroki Kikuta (Secret of Mana, Soul Calibur V), and Norihiko Hibino (Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Bayonetta 2). And the atmosphere, which touches on the narrative a little, is an awesome mixture of playful and suspenseful, with environments that range from the beautiful to the imposing.
Next, the gameplay: the developers have gone way out of their way to make this as approachable and as fun to play as any JRPG you love. You can do it all with a mouse if you want. On top of that, they've removed many of the most annoying aspects of roguelike gaming. You know the ones: mystery items you have to use to identify, cursed weapons you can't remove without the right items, randomized enemy placement that puts 10th floor monsters on the first floor, and etc. Tangledeep is balanced, quick, and a ton of fun to play, with many of its systems out in the open. Stats, attributes, item descriptions, and tutorials are all in-game and super helpful. If previous roguelikes have intimidated you, start here. It'll help a ton.
Last, it's a ton, ton, ton of fun. There are multiple classes, tons of weapons, armor, and magic, summons, pet monsters, a casino, legendary item sets, and plenty of good humor. Plus there's a fun (though relatively small and straightforward) story here, which kept me engaged and endeared me to the characters.
TL;DR versio - PLAY THIS GAME! It's beautiful.
I have recently become a big fan of roguelikes. I have such a good time with the balance of gameplay and tension. However, most roguelikes have a single way to play them, with the possibility of maybe some different characters to start the game.
Tangledeep has all of the main trappings of a good roguelike: permadeath, turn-based combat, tons of items and equipment to find, and more. However, this game gives so many options.
I suppose you could call it a "roguelite", but that's doing the core game a disservice. The main mode has permadeath, but with saving a few things for the next playthrough, such as storing items for the next loop, and pets and plants that carry over.
But the best thing about this game is that it features a HUGE amount of customization. Not only are there a dozen different character classes, but there is a menu of play-defining options. This is what makes this game a great experience.
After you pick your character, you get to pick 2 feats, which can drastically change the gameplay. On top of that, you have a long list of run modifiers.
This is important.
The core game experience is very, VERY hard. This is perfect for long-term roguelike fans
However, I am a little more casual when it comes to roguelikes. As much as I love them, sometimes they are a little too challenging. This is where Tangledeep really shines. Not only are there multiple difficulty levels (including one that removes permadeath), there is a long list of customization options that can make the game more challenging or easier.
After playing hours of the default game, I was getting frustrated at the difficulty. Then I decided to give in and tweak the settings. The only two modifiers I have used are "health regenerates outside combat" and "pets return to corral with no penalty". These two minor things made the game a lot more enjoyable for me. And there are tons of these to mix it up.
TLDR: Tons of options let this appeal to both casual and hardcore roguelike fans.
From the ads, I thought this game would be right up my alley, but it's relatively cheesy. Cookie-cutter quests. "Go into the (input level name) and get the (input item name) and bring it back to me." Sort of like listening to someone play Mad-Libs who has no sense of humor.
HOWEVER - if you like games like Eschalon, then this is probably right up your alley. The game makers know it's not Skyrim, and they priced it appropriately. I still have it installed, and am likely to play it again sometime. I'm not sad I bought it.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
