Sunblaze

It has really cute and well done pixel art graphics. Story is kinda soft and soyish. Music is bad and repetitive. Gameplay is heavier than games like SMB. Apart from that it's does what it is supposed to do and depends if you're into that kind of games. The difference with Super Meat Boy is that the ambiance was so good it pushed me to persevere even if it was really punishing. Here I really didn't feel like it.

This is a challenging platformer. There is no combat, but the game is spent navigating different obstacles to reach the goal at the end of each level. Tons of hazards in the way. Things become pretty difficult by the end. The main character has a few abilities, but does not gain any more as the game progresses. I wasn't too impressed when I started out, but the game managed to keep me engaged. I ended up beating it and collecting all the extra boxes in each chapter, which resulted in unlocking extra-difficult levels. After a few of them, I realized there's a huge list and I ended up not continuing. The game is good, but not *that* good. The story is very simple. Nothing special. The retro graphics are good-looking, depending on the level. Some levels are almost monochromatic. Anyway, if you're a fan of difficult and challenging retro platformers, you'll like this.

It's a hard platformer, but once you really get used to the controls the biggest difficulty becomes to know what to do on certain levels. The death animations and blood on the scenario after dying are less brutal than some levels. The simple story, nice music/sounds and great gameplay make the game really fun. Not a "game of the year" but this was never the intention of this title, it's a good combination of fun, simplicity and difficulty. Running on Linux, with Wine and Wayland, I've notice only one issue: the game completely freezes when it's window looses focus, regardless of any options on the settings.
