Styx: Master of Shadows is an infiltration game with RPG elements taking place in a dark fantasy universe, where you sneak, steal and assassinate your way through as Styx, a Goblin two-centuries of age.
Deep inside the vertiginous and multi-layered forsaken Tower of Akenash, where Humans and Elves protect the World-Tree, source of the Amber – a powerful and magical golden sap – is hidden Styx’ chance to understand his true origin... and to make a fortune at the same time.
Prowl through the huge, miles-high Tower of Akenash, completing various missions (assassination, information recovery, etc.) and avoiding detection. Progress in the shadows, assassinate your targets in close combat, or orchestrate «accidents». RPG mechanics let you unlock new powerful skills, impressive special moves, and an optimized equipment. Amber will grant you spectacular powers such as invisibility, «amber vision», and the ability to clone yourself. Explore the levels to discover every bit of information about your past, and steal prized treasures to acquire equipment upgrades. Embrace the shadows!
Mission areas featuring truly organic player path-finding
A strong focus on hardcore stealth and infiltration: progress through the shadows with a sense of verticality, and explore to find hidden treasures
Upgrade your skills along six unique skill-trees to improve your stealth, assassination, and technique.
Distract, solve, smother and prowl with your clone
An intricate story full of twists and revelations
Reminiscent of Thief and comparable to Dishonored's stealth mechanics.
Excellent climbing controls
Cannot initiate melee is a bummer but fully encourages stealth/predator like gameplay which is probably the whole point of such a game isn't it?
I just finished the game after a some nearly 50 hours (I like to take my time), and it was really a mixed bag. I like the premise of the game and the core stealth experience. However the game suffers from repetition, questionable balancing and bugs that really hurts the experience. The second half of the game you go through the same levels again but backwards. That makes it less interesting than the first half to me.
What saved the game for me was the ablity to freely save the game, which significantly reduced the time spent redoing stuff after fails. I understand that in a stealth game there will be trial and error involved, but many times I felt it wasn't my fault. The enemies will get stuck on the level geometry, on other enemies and sometimes their routine just breaks and they stand forever stuck in place (I'm not talking about enemies that are meant to stand in place). Also, some enemies are really overpowered and it's a pain to get around, especially later on when the levels are crowded with enemies. The plataforming is serviceable, but often fails. I died far more from falling after tring to jump around then from enemies killing me. The combat is terrible, but you can beat the game without doing it so it's ok. Also multiple ACHIEVEMENTS ARE STILL BUGGED over ten years after the game came out.
i like this game, havent gotten very far in it. super duper fantastic game; will probally buy sequel if it goes on sale soon or when i finish this one. 80 qudrillion outta ten.
The plot and story in the game was OK, but it has some serious bugs and issues. and WHY does GOG Galaxy open when starting a game that is supposed to be DRM free?!
- At times the game stutters A LOT, and the sound brakes up, making the game more or less unplayable. This is on a computer with a AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12 core CPU and GTX 1080 Ti graphics card!
- You are rewarded if you do not kill anyone, but there are no way of checking during the chapters IF you have killed someone accidentally! At least not on the first play through. And I am not very tempted to replay the game a second time.
- You are rewarded if you do not alarm anyone, but there are no way of checking during the chapters IF you have alarmed someone, or if the clone is the one alarming anyone! At least not on the first play through. And I am not very tempted to replay the game a second time.
- You are rewarded if you find and collect relics. Relics that are hidden in places you might not even pass close to, making them hard to find. On top of that, some of them requires a puzzle to unlock/access with no/barely any hints on how to access them. At least not on the first play through. And I am not very tempted to replay the game a second time.
- It often seems to be a crap shoot if you are able or not to sneak past guards, and there are an insane amount of them!!!
- Guards repeatedly walks into door frames time after time after time after...
- Guards periodically freezes, just standing there without any reaction even if you walk in front of them in plain sight!
- You are rewarded for collecting medallions/coins. These are far too often placed more or less "under the noses" of the guards, making it hard and WERY time consuming to collect all the medallions/coins! A prime example of game padding :-(
- Frustrating when you have to save and load repeatedly when trying and failing since quick saving uses one single slot, and saving requires about six steps every single time you want to save when a finite number of slots are used!
- If you or your clone is discovered, you or your clone suddenly seems magnetized and are drawn to the guard/elf that reaches out for you when they get close!
- EVERY enemy have a reaction time of NILL: You can try to sneak past a sleeping guard, and in THE moment he/it wakes up he/it has FULL control and awareness of the situation and knows exactly where you are!
This is a stealth/sneak game, but periodically you are forced to fight, and you are forced to fight with a character that are FAR from up to the task, making fighting really frustrating and annoying!
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
