A Memorable Descent into Despair

I have some familiarity with Stasis, having played though the first two some years ago with a friend and remembering little else than a few of the particularly gruesome deaths and themes. Coming into this one as blind as i could, I came away feeling drained yet satisfied, and I ultimately would recommend this for anyone who can overcome the often obtuse puzzles and overwhelmingly sickening displays of violence found within. Its a bloody good time, and one with a heart in the center that just won't stop beating. The narrative is a relentless descent with all the glee of its own depravity so unhinged that it all too often circles back into edgy goofiness. This is often not helped by the impressively high fidelity yet janky CG cutscenes that often feel almost too zoomed in at times on the poor lipsyncing and animation--yet ooze charm throughout. I love me some good cheese, and Bone Totem delivers in spades, but like any good meal the cheese only compliments the meaty goodness within. Everything is deeply earnest, and if you let yourself become immersed, you're in for a stomach-churning treat. What impressed me the most with my experience with Bone Totem was how ambitious the narrative is, and how for the most part it sticks the landing. Its really only in the final few hours that it begins to trip over its own entrails, but even within what feels like the most arduous portions some of the best narrative moments play out. I really am trying to not discuss anything that may spoil your experience; it really should be played blind like how I approached it. That being said I cannot resist from mentioning how much I came to adore Moses, the sentient Teddy Bear with PTSD. I was immediately offput by his introduction yet the writing and voice acting is just so stellar that I can't help but shout it out. I have every intention to replay the first two to see how they compare--I may update my review here later, but this game deserves a playthrough. Don't miss this one.

Tone is off

You start with two characters. Mac and his Daugther*. They dissover a huge oil rig in middle of the night in a storm**. They discover that it's a Cayne Corp. vessel which makes her repeatadly say: "I hope everything is ok." in a scared voice and with a foreshadowing tone. They go on board. Mac goes first and he seems causeous (seems sensible because: night + rough sea + Cayne). You can't progress further with him so it's her turn. She says again that she hopes that everything is alright. Passes by Mac to BALANCE ON A WET STEELBEAM OVER THE BLACK SEA WITHOUT HESITATION. Mac is concerned almost furious with her (mood: dangerous, irresponsible, we can't afford an accident) but she just shruggs it off. A little later she fixes a tube with duct tape and calls it "airtight" to which Mac responds: "another big word to make you sound smarter than me" to which she replies that she does not need to use big words. ...big words... like... airtight?! And finally the straw that broke the camals back (about 30min into game): She goes into the vessel (probably right after saying how she hopes that everythings ok) and discover a bloodied body with blood around it on ritualistic runes that looks like 120% like horrible murder. The two are shocked. Mac calls it and tells her to get back immediatly. But she plays it down like this: Yeah, maybe it's bad but maybe it's nothing... Anyways it doesn't really matter because moeny and it's just like one body so big deal. Nope, I'm out! *from starting the game I thought she must be the daugter. I rewatched the trailer and I was wrong, she's the wife... this makes the issue with tone even worse :( **the dialogue implied that it was a storm but it was more like a little rain with with some small to medium waves. definetily no picknick but.

My Mac...

All the characters have a story, character and purpose. Some passages a little slow and the movement of the characters a little stiff. The puzzles are not very complicated. The only thing that can stop you is not having found the right object. The story is gripping.

Great story, amazing voice acting

I loved everything about this game. The story, the art, the atmosphere and above all, the voice acting. It would still be a good game without voice acting, but it made me feel things more viscerally. Hearing the love, despair, trust, pain, fear and hope in the characters made it all the more real. The writing is excellent and I made sure to take my time to read the little atmospheric writing in the different rooms. It really helped sell the tone of the areas as well as how the characters felt about the things they witnessed. I read all logs and the different characters felt unique with a sense of individuality. I loved reading one character's log and then seeing them pop up by name in other peoples' logs. Wonderful breadcrumbs to follow if that's something you enjoy. This is an absolute recommendation from me. I am looking forward to what this team can do in the future.

A must-play sci-fi adventure

"You must watch for the parasites' presence... then act with accuracy and haste." When treasure hunters Charlie and Mac O'Bannon dock their salvage vessel to what looks like an abandoned oil rig, it seems like they have caught a break at last- but players of the first STASIS (2015) will share Mac's sentiment when the platform's name plaque comes into view: "Shit! It's a Cayne Corp rig..." Right enough, as they explore the place, bodies start piling up, increasingly few of them still having all of their parts. After the wildly imaginative Beautiful Desolation (2020), The Brotherhood have returned to a more conventional sci-fi horror setting, but that doesn't mean that the worldbuilding and narrative are any less dense and gripping. Like in BD, you get to explore the interconnected stories of several factions, further developing topics in the nexus of technology and religion. The titular concept of keeping human beings in storage remains in place, but seen through the lens of a culture that worships death about as much as Cayne does immortality. For all their differences, the atavistic tribe and the futuristic corporation are stunningly similar. An increasingly personal quest leads you through this exploration. Charlie and Mac are very well-rounded characters, and so is Moses, the AI powered toy bear of their dead daughter, Hope. Their dialogue feels very organic, plus the voice acting is outstanding. Gorgeous cinematic cutscenes make the characters come to life even more. Gameplay is the most streamlined in a The Brotherhood game yet. Gone is the tedious backtracking of BD, and mapping drones helpfully highlight POI in the environment. Puzzling is done in dedicated 2D screens, so no pixel hunting, but you still have to pay close attention to every detail- numbers, shapes, colours, little here is just decoration. Puzzles are varied and creative, but fair throughout. If you liked the first STASIS, or SOMA, or any good sci-fi adventure, this is a must-play.
