Wizards of the Coast granted Tactical Adventures a license to use the Dungeons and Dragons SRD 5.1 Ruleset, further anchoring our will to make the most faithful video game adaptation with the Tabletop Ruleset and craft the game you are hoping for!
Solasta: Crown of the Magister brings back the thrill, tactics, and deep storytelling of tabletop games. As you play, you'll feel yourself reaching for your dice and miniatures. It's time to dive into the world of Solasta. Roll for initiative!
Created and written by lifelong fans of Pen & Paper RPGs, comes Solasta: Crown of the Magister.
Bring the authentic Tabletop gaming experience to your PC!
Roll for initiative, take attacks of opportunity, manage player location and the verticality of the battle field. Set yourself up for the finishing strike and possibly roll a natural 20 at that key moment of battle.
In Solasta, you take control of four heroes, each with unique skills that complement one another. Every hero expresses themselves in the adventure, making each action and dialog choice a dynamic part to the story. Players will create their heroes just as they would in a pen-and-paper game by choosing their race, class, personality and rolling for their stats.
You make the choices, dice decide your destiny.
Key Features:
An Epic Team Adventure.
Discover the shattered world of Solasta: explore ruins and dungeons for legendary treasures, learn the truth of an age-old cataclysm - and stop it from happening again.
Create your very own party of adventurers with our Character Creation Tool in the classic tabletop RPG tradition. Breathe life into your heroes, and see their personalities reflected in their dialogue. Tailor your squad to your preferred strategy and maximize your party's abilities. The choice is yours.
Discover a Mysterious & Dynamic World.
Delve into long forgotten dungeons to unearth ancient artifacts, but stay watchful of light and darkness: many dangers hide in the dark, but a light can attract monsters. Some enemies have darkvision, some may flee from your torch... Successful adventurers will learn to use it to their advantage.
Fight monsters in squad-level, turn-based, tactical combat. Solasta's dynamic environment offers some interesting tactical options. Bridges can collapse, leaving enemies stranded and vulnerable. Walls and columns can be pushed over - on top of your foes, if you do it right. The world is your playground.
Prepare to Think in Three Dimensions.
The dungeons in Solasta are more than flat game-boards. Climb, jump, or fly around obstacles. Evade or surprise foes from above or below. Push them into chasms or drop things on their heads. Position yourself on high grounds to start the fight with an advantage.
Size also matters. Escape through narrow passages where bigger enemies won't fit and crawl through tunnels to find secret areas. Take advantage of the environment to find cover suited to your own size. Watch out, though - the monsters are also thinking vertically.
As someone who played AD&D through the 90s and pretty much every computer RPG since, this is THE best translation from the tabletop game to computer I've come across. All the tone and feel is there and the storyline so far has been excellent. Very atmospheric and tactical, with that extra bit of chance livening things up. I highly recommend this.
I enjoyed it a lot. Recommended for fans of cRPG's, tabletops and/or tactical/turn-based combat.
Pros:
-Good pacing (around 40 hours for first full playthrough)
-Excellent translation of DnD rules to a video game
-Excellent UI; easy to use, looks great, does not feel cluttered even when you have tons of items
-Not too many silly side quests (you won't be finding people's lost pets as the world is ending)
-Surprisingly few bugs, none game-breaking
-Good value for money at 35 USD
-Dungeon Maker functionality should allow for a lots of great user-generated campaigns in the future
Cons/might bother some people:
-Dialogue can be a little cringey at times
-Might be difficult to pick up if not familiar with DnD rules or similar tabletop RPGs; easy to pick skills and abilities that are relatively not very useful and there is no way to respec (as of the 1.0 release)
-Not much to do other than get to the next fight; quite linear
-Limited enemy variety
-Not-AAA graphics and not the greatest voice acting
The bugs I did encounter playing through the 1.0 release:
-a couples of times, objects became unable to be interacted with (not sure what caused this but restarting fixed it
-weapon offset slightly off in the inventory screen- weapons clip through the hand slightly above where your character is supposed to be holding it
-one side quest unable to be completed due to a missing NPC
Remember meeting friends at the local IHOP or in your basement to play some D&D? That's what this is. Perfect for a few hours' adventuring now and then. The dungeon master says..."you see 3 panels with elaborate sigils", etc. is the feeling you get.
Your tactical options are wide open and every decision counts. And the story is at the correct weight for what this is. This game may be better than Baldur's, Darklands, and the Gold Box games.
Once I finish I'll be eagerly awaiting new stories using this amazing gaming engine.
The story they have built is utter garbage, but thankfully there are player made campaigns.
Graphics are ps2 era.
Combat is wonderful, very authentic DnD.
Since the entire story is pinholed and mega linear, your customization matters little.
Some crashing and bugs.
Some very basic features (certain classes and races) are behind a paywall.
Note this is a 3 star for the game as it stands with the bare bones of it all.
In a player made campaign this could be great, however I must review what the devs gave us.
And as many have said before, low budget and they are genuinely trying to make a good game here.
Great RPG experience. New ruleset simulation (5e) is pretty good. Engine looks like it can have a lot of good use for many campaigns. I don't like the user interface for moving/camera rotation seems cludgy. Camera height could be better and should be able to rotate & move camera all with the mouse opposed to mouse + wasd. Item and object interaction items should have better highlights (they are hard to spot as scenes are very detailed). Engine needs some optimization, high cpu usage. If you like RPG games buy it.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
