Wizards of the Coast granted Tactical Adventures a license to use the Dungeons and Dragons SRD 5.1 Ruleset, further anchoring our will to make the most faithful video game adaptation with the Tabletop Ruleset and craft the game you are hoping for!
Solasta: Crown of the Magister brings back the thrill, tactics, and deep storytelling of tabletop games. As you play, you'll feel yourself reaching for your dice and miniatures. It's time to dive into the world of Solasta. Roll for initiative!
Created and written by lifelong fans of Pen & Paper RPGs, comes Solasta: Crown of the Magister.
Bring the authentic Tabletop gaming experience to your PC!
Roll for initiative, take attacks of opportunity, manage player location and the verticality of the battle field. Set yourself up for the finishing strike and possibly roll a natural 20 at that key moment of battle.
In Solasta, you take control of four heroes, each with unique skills that complement one another. Every hero expresses themselves in the adventure, making each action and dialog choice a dynamic part to the story. Players will create their heroes just as they would in a pen-and-paper game by choosing their race, class, personality and rolling for their stats.
You make the choices, dice decide your destiny.
Key Features:
An Epic Team Adventure.
Discover the shattered world of Solasta: explore ruins and dungeons for legendary treasures, learn the truth of an age-old cataclysm - and stop it from happening again.
Create your very own party of adventurers with our Character Creation Tool in the classic tabletop RPG tradition. Breathe life into your heroes, and see their personalities reflected in their dialogue. Tailor your squad to your preferred strategy and maximize your party's abilities. The choice is yours.
Discover a Mysterious & Dynamic World.
Delve into long forgotten dungeons to unearth ancient artifacts, but stay watchful of light and darkness: many dangers hide in the dark, but a light can attract monsters. Some enemies have darkvision, some may flee from your torch... Successful adventurers will learn to use it to their advantage.
Fight monsters in squad-level, turn-based, tactical combat. Solasta's dynamic environment offers some interesting tactical options. Bridges can collapse, leaving enemies stranded and vulnerable. Walls and columns can be pushed over - on top of your foes, if you do it right. The world is your playground.
Prepare to Think in Three Dimensions.
The dungeons in Solasta are more than flat game-boards. Climb, jump, or fly around obstacles. Evade or surprise foes from above or below. Push them into chasms or drop things on their heads. Position yourself on high grounds to start the fight with an advantage.
Size also matters. Escape through narrow passages where bigger enemies won't fit and crawl through tunnels to find secret areas. Take advantage of the environment to find cover suited to your own size. Watch out, though - the monsters are also thinking vertically.
Solasta is a party-based RPG with four protagonists, closer to a dungeon-crawler or a tactical RPG, than other cRPGs. There are several NPCs who can temporarily (for one or two battles) join the party in combat. There are several classes, weapons, backgrounds and manners of speech. Backgrounds provide unique quests (1 per background) during the game. Most of the time the party uses auto-dialogue according to their personality tags, but there are dialogue options as well, which may affect the story.
The main story is mostly linear (there are few choices), with new objectives appearing after completing the previous ones. There are several side quests. Combat is usually unavoidable (the game cannot be completed without it), but it is not possible to attack neutral or friendly NPCs without announcing your intention first (there is one exception, where the boss turned hostile after the party looted the room). In the situations when it is possible to use diplomacy, the XP reward is roughly equal to the one gained by killing the boss.
The combat is turn-based with adjustable difficulty, from damage dealt to spell requirements to random encounters. There are also separate settings for AI. Maps are fully 3D and vertical movement is meaningful.
The reputation system affects only the items available for purchase, but not the story.
The crafting system is easy to understand and crafted equipment and consumables provide advantage without being balance-breaking.
The graphics and sound are adequate, they fit the setting and do not distract from combat. The style is consistent and animations are expressive.
GUI is comfortable to use, but relies mostly on the mouse and there are too few hotkeys. The controls are responsive and rebindable, 5-button mice are supported. Tutorials are easy to understand and helpful, but some important features are not mentioned, such as Identifying magical items.
The number of save files is limited to 50 and they are located in AppData (why would a hidden folder) and names for custom characters cannot be repeated.
I have encountered several small graphical glitches (animations not playing when speeded up; wrong portrait shown after combat), several small audio bugs (VA and subtitles did not match) and one softlock (during a late-game main quest, “The Mind of the Master”). Optimisation is lacking - frames per second dropped in areas with water, GPU temperature was high during gameplay.
The Tactical Adventures team has done a great job of adapting the DD5 rules and offers us with Solasta a very pleasant game.
This game is visually at the level of the best, the fights are lively and the basic Dungeons and Dragons rules are well respected. Only downside, the campaign can sometimes seem a bit linear and sides quests sometimes limited. But in the end the story is well taken is interesting so frankly well done.
I first played Early Access and was surprised by the level of finish and the lack of big bugs. In the final version patched with the implementation of the sorcerer and the new maps of the dungeon creator, we now all feel the potential of this game.
I give this game 5 stars because its concept reminds me of Icewindale, game that I loved and also Baldur's Gates and Neverwinter nights, now remains to implement multi-player and I trust the devs for that because they are of my point of seen at the top.
I realize that it's a different platform but this game is worth getting on any platform. With the new multiplayer option available, it's even more fun. After this much time into it, I really haven't had the bugs that some of have said but like others have said, it's a lot like BG3 but seems to be more balanced. Not as graphically polished but it's the game play that's the focus, not cut scene graphics. Both games are a win, don't get me wrong, it's awesome having these options again. Seem to be such a dry spell in the turn based, RPG genre for a while.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
