Sid Meier's Colonization

If only Colonization games were as awesome and dynamic as Sid Meier's is. This guy is a genius! A random new world to explore and conquer. Its like a cross between 7 cities of Gold and civilization all rolled into one. ...And a bit of Star ruler too.

Nostalgia aside - it's flawless. Miles better than either of the Civ games, since the setting and small, focused changes elevate the feel of the 4x game. A timeless classic.

I am now 26 years old and while I buy lots of games I can only afford to spend a few hours a month playing them. I first played this game back in 1994 when I was 7 years old and I had completed it on Viceroy (the hardest setting) by the times I was 8. I was and am facsinated by the brutal effieciency required to get ahead and this game still monopolizes many of my limited gaming hours. You have to constantly balance so many aspects: managing relations with Indians, decimating European foes, getting a trade empire established and ultimately combining every aspect to fight the single most relentless force I have EVER encountered in any game. Everytime you start this game you can decide a new path for your Colonies. From deciding which goods to focus on trading, to peacfully engraciate yourself with the natives or to systematically wipe them out and whether you are going to focus on 1 super city of spread a number of colonies across a trade network. This is the my personal favourite game of all time. The music gets me excited and the feeling I get when I am able to recruit my first blue coated veteran soldier in each game is second to to none! I would recommend this game to anyone that has the patience to sit through a playthrough of long civ building games.

I love this game since the DOS era. It is surprisingly complex enough in spite of being 30 years old. Here is a useful tip for planning a successful colony : hidden resource patterns follow always 4th block next to pine tree, feather, deer, ore etc.

I loved playing this game when I first got it as part of a pack of old games on CD. After losing a CD drive, I discovered that they lived on again on Steam and GoG. Despite others herelamenting the loss of the Win95 version, this is the same old DOS version that I played and loved many years ago. I loved the purpose behind the "expand and conquer", it gives a small nod to history whilst presenting something fun to play. The only gripe I had with it (and it is probably more to do with my style of play) is that it only allows for 50 units on the board at any given time, any more than this, and it deletes them from the game. This includes new military units built, or immigrants from Europe. The only way around this is to build more cities, to give more units a home, but there's only so much space on the map. The newer version, based on Civ 4, with the "We The People" mod is a much more enriched version of the game, with way more craft/trade options, and lots more European nations to play. This one's fun, the other one's better.
