Worth it even without nostalgia
I recently discovered Colonization, and found it to be a really good game that does not feel aged. Of course the graphics are simple, but they could just as well be from a modern retro-style game.

Excellent game, the port, however...
So I'm a huge fan of Colonization. I played it all the time when I was younger! This definitely scratched an itch that I didn't get when playing Civ II--the level of micromanagement was really appealing. Even with four factions, exploring the map and establishing colonies was the best thing ever! So why 4 stars? Well...the game I played as a kid wasn't the MS-DOS version, but a later port released for Windows. This meant more accurate graphics, MUCH more legible text, and a menu bar that had things like stats, victory progress, and the Colonizopedia. It was much easier to navigate (having mouse support) and looked better to boot. Unfortunately, I've had a time and a half trying to find this port, since people are only distributing the DOSBox version. If GOG could release the Windows port, that would be awesome and give Colonization a new level of accessibility to younger gamers. Still, if you don't mind the older graphics then don't let that stop you from getting this! It just doesn't work for me, though.

Cruelty-free Conquest
I got tired of that depressing image, of the native kids waving at the cannons rolling in to kill them. And the game's more interesting without it. On medium difficulty, it's not easy to find free territory but it is possible. (This part actually reminds me of Machiavelli: The Prince, where the initial fun is simply scooting around the map, lighting it up.) It's more challenging to develop resource chains without driving out the natives, and at revolution-time, you can shut down all your temporary, raw-material cities and force the King to conquer one or two superforts. Plays faster, too.

A great all-in one strategy-game.
Great game when fully set in. You can buy it here at gog.com or buy it cheap of Amazon. Nevertheless the key is Magic DosBox or just DosBox. The mouse can be finicy to dial in but when adjusted (dont forget to middleclick and use the wheel). -Voila! But the mechanics are wonderfully crafted and a 20 year dated eloge should be granted to the Microprose-game. Its their masterpiece the piece tha resistance in my meaning. Not to long to get in to but a couple of weeks to master. Not for the faint of hearted, but names.txt can be edited to mod it into a slightly less worrying matter. You think the slaves and the peasants are to costly? Edit their values in names.txt for a value more historically accurate. Surpassing many if not all strategy-games. Not because its graphics but because its game-mechanics and focusing on... Colonization...

Old favourite
My father bought my first PC second hand from a friend. The machine came with this game installed on it and I am playing it ever since. My first SM turned-based strategy game ever; as up until then I had experience only with real-time strategy games, it took me a while (like 20 new games over a period of a couple of months) to find out how that strange white and brown blop (the caravel, never recognized it as a ship until I managed to move it) move. But I never quit trying and once it occured to me that the keyboard might be somehow involved in putting commands in a computer, it was a love of (twenty-ish)first sight!
