Underwhelming but Appreciable
I can't say as I'm amazed. Shadowrun: Dragonfall does most things right. But it's not at all appropriate to list this in the Role-playing category of games. It's very well scripted. The dialog is fresh and keeps you engaged, none of the characters are simplistic in their background or their opinions. The gameplay is, from all I've read, a much better incarnation than the first Shadowrun. Unfortunately for me it was incredibly familiar. There wasn't any big disappointment in the gameplay, except when I tried to build an Adept the first time and made a lot of mistakesin character development. However the game's effort to recreate "The Matrix" as more of the same kind of combat not only made the came take longer than it needed to but it also served to highlight the boring limitations of combat as it was presented in the game. Because the bulk of the gameplay is the combat, this turns most of the campaign into a collection of bottlenecks. Not in difficulty so much as pacing. Dramatic moments are underscored by lengthy fights against unvaried enemies. The only termendous surprise was the (spoiler) in the basement. Still it's the first time in a long time that I've visited the world of Shadowrun and I hope to find my old sourcematerial soon and maybe run the shadows again, and for that, I'm glad for Harebrained Studios. If an interest in Shadow is the reaction more people have than not, that's a success all of it's own.

Great cyberpunk RPG
I did not expect much, but I was overwhelmed. Great, long and complex RPG without being chaotic or confusing in "what is the player supposed to do". Do you handle the guns well? Or do you prefer melee? Do you project your consciousness into the matrix or do you let your drones do your hard work for you? Or do you leave the world of cold steel and silicone behind you and sling magical energies and summon guardians? Choose your path... There are 3 games, so my 2 cents to each one of them: Shadowrun Returns (Dead Man's Switch) - first game and going straight back to gritty Seattle. Weakest story of the series, but still great and enjoyable with a cyberpunk-noir ambience. Shadowrun DragonFall - takes you to Berlin and it's chaotic Flux state. When the after fall of a botched job turns into a fight for survival. Much better writing and NPC companions with and awesome mix of talking and fighting. Shadowrun Hong Kong - when the past catches up on you, you gotta set things right. Even if everyone turns out to be after you as you walk into a trap. Now, who set that trap up? And why? And - most importantly - how much do I want them to hurt when I catch them? Excellent writing in this one, yet it seems a bit more "chatty" than the other 2 games. (Still a lot of fighting tho)

A True CRPG
I realized how much I loved this game when I entered a dialogue fully expecting it to result in a boss fight, and instead used my character's Decking skill in coordination with a sidequest (which seemed trivial and pointless at the time) that I'd completed earlier in order to get the goods I'd come for diplomatically. My party walked out of the room, with our goods, without firing a single shot. This is, truly, a roleplaying game, and that's something that's become rare in the video game scene as of late. The story actually drew me in, which is something I haven't really experienced in a long time, and it was very refreshing. The characters are each interesting, and you actually grow to care for them and understand them as your journey continues. The dialogue system offers plenty of choices right off the bat, and your character's skills and features only open up more. Unlike many games that have come out recently (I'm looking at you, Fallout 4!), the dialogue options actually change the direction of the conversation, rather than always leading to the same exact result. Dialogue can affect the game just as much as (and perhaps even more than) combat. Speaking of the combat, it is just about perfect for a CRPG. It's always just difficult enough that a wrong move can get you killed, but victory is always possible if you use the tools at your disposal wisely. Despite being turn-based and giving you all the time in the world to consider your next move, it always feels tense and real. Many turn-based combat systems feel like you're playing a board game, but in SR:DF it actually feels like you're in a firefight. I haven't yet played Returns or Hong Kong, though I definitely intend to, so I can't compare it to the other two games. What I can say is that this game was a delightfully refreshing return to the CRPG genre for me, and that if you enjoy CRPGs, narratively-driven games, or tabletop roleplaying games, you'll enjoy Dragonfall.

Overstays its Welcome
I loved Shadowrun Returns. It wasn't overly long, had a good story and while it was completely linear, I enjoyed that. Dragonfall is more of the same but with a less intersting (to me) story. Add the inclusion of multiple side missions and the game meanders for too long. There is an over arcing story but the side missions just come across as filler. Which is all side quests are. But these ones are boring and I found getting through them just to continue the main story a slog. Love the setting and gameplay but I preferred Returns.
