Great potential

In Roboquest, you pick one of four Guardians with their own flavor of combat in order to shoot other robots whilst powering up your own skillset and arsenal. I started playing this game last December, so I may make a few positive comments regarding the progression of the game's development since then. Roboquest follows a simple gameplay loop of starting the level, kill as many robots as possible whilst collecting their cells, and reach the end of the level in order to fight the bosses. The levels also contain these platforming sections that may give you more equipment, guns, wrenches and possibly perk upgrades. The name of the game is to try to move as fast as possible throughout the levels. You aren't necessarily timed in the sense that you fail the level if you don't move fast enough, but you will get an overall lower score at the end of the level, which may affect how many wrenches you receive. Wrenches are the currency used to upgrade your basecamp, which will give you access to more guns to select from at the start of your run, more affixes that your guns can contain, the ability to equip gadgets, just to name a few. When I first played, there wasn't a whole bunch to spend wrenches on, but now it feels like it has been expanded greatly. Movement is also a massive plus to the game. I love running around and double-jumping, especially when the game rewards you with goomba-stomping other robots. You can also grind on guardrails which could lead you to more vertical land. You pick up equipment as well throughout the levels which come in four types: Assault, Precision, Demolition, and Technology. These all give 5% damage per stack, though they used to do a bit more (ex: Technology, IIRC, used to also give CD Reduction on your Guardian's abilities. If not, you get the idea). These, however, were consolidated into buffs on your equipment pieces, or as affixes on the guns. I reccommend the game if you're into shooters and especially roguelites.

It STILL has great potential!

[UPDATED] I really love the whole concept. I love rougelike FPS games in the first place, but this game is a different level. Replayability is huge due the various build options, weapon variety, affixes you can get. You can find characters all over the place, you have secret levels, you can do little tasks (some of them are not that little at all :D ) do gain some extra gadgets, or shops, etc. Some of these are time-limited events you have to complete, some of them you have to bring a certain item, or a certain amount of stuff to complete them. Compared to the early access version, now you can build up superB synergies with the skills and the weapons! You can do insane damage, or be super speedy, or tanky - it's your choice (if the game gives you the stuff for you build of course! :D ) The art style of the game is 10/10, I really like it! I hope it will get a DLC or something with new levels. I already invested 77 hours into the game, found a load of stuff already, but still have some little things to complete, while I can try to beat the harder levels. And the music... it's just godlike! :D The cons what I found previously are GONE. I don't have any hardware issues, FPS is good, everything is nice! The levels are richly detailed! [OLD REVIEW] It has a long way to go with its development, but the core gameplay of this game is rock solid. Pros: - Really cool weapon category system connected to the actual used mods on your Bot. It has 4 major categories, and its not your classic weapon cats. Even so, it can have lots of modifier on it. - Cool weapon designs. There are some weirdly familiar ones (for example, Flak Cannon), but its not a copy-paste version of the original one. It has its own Roboquest-flawor in it - The level up - perk system is cool. You can set up a main category skill, and you can add extra bonuses and modifiers for them through your levelups. You can use different perk-builds for your actual runs. Kinda neat. - It has an "Immortal Redneck vibe" somehow for me :D - The pace of the shooting-action part is ramping up after each maps. In the end, it became really fast-pace action-packed fun! - The game atmosphere is very unique ... - It has lot of platforming parts! Cons: - Game optimization. I mean the game runs with okay FPS, but man.. my RTX2080S cooling ramps up so hard, my card is on fire. I do not understand why, because I don't think the game visuals are that demanding. (My card do not have any kind of cooling problems, its runs fine with other games). - ... but the game atmosphere can be pretty dull sometimes. A bit more variety of objects and textures could be a great addition. For example: The Aqua-related maps are unique, but just adding a lots of white surfaces, pipes, water and solar panels are not enough. Add some "life to it" Overall this game has great potential!

surprised i didnt hear about this sooner

this game does a lot to satisfy the many hankerings i have, when looking for a shooter game. the character handles with "quake-like' responsiveness, in the movement, shooting, and other utilities. the systems, of the game itself, are surprising and unique; randomized weapon looting-- combined with earnable classes and abilities for your character, 'run' based progression through semi-randomized maps, and hidden loot for perks, weapons, in game currency, and secrets. you could say that the visuals are definitely "indie-caliber", but in my opinion, they are very clean-- and the performance is fantastic, even on my machine, which can often struggle with GPU load. all of these aspects combine to create a type of game that i have personally never played, and i am very excited to try the co-op with my brother.

Fun for about 6-8 hours - repetitive

I would get it on sale. Expect about 6-8 hours of fun. Enemies and levels are quite similar, even if levels are proceduraly generated. Gameplay feels good, but 90% of the time you hold down mouse 1 while running circles around enemies. There isn't really a story to speak of.

good fun

rock solid core mechanics with a easygoing gameplay loop finished with a wide spread of weapons my one gripe is that your character choice can narrow your playstyle/weapon choice to a select few out of the whole aresenal this is most apparent on the one with the shot gun melee ability
