Thank you GOG!!! This is the game I have been waiting for. Requiem has always held a special place in my heart, and through there are issues with it (enemies perfect aim, extremely difficult areas, enemies popping in through closed doors, etc) it has always been one of my favorite games. I too, still have the original cd, but due to DirectX problems, it would never play on a computer beyond Win XP. I am picking this one up for sure tonight.
It has quite the unique setting, mixing dark fantasy and futuristic urban action. You can already tell the game is gonna be something just from the first level.
The weapons aren't anything special, but the game features a magic system like the one in Jedi Knight. Such powers include shooting lightning from your hands and turning enemies into salt.
You're going to die a lot. The game pulls no punches in throwing bullshit hitscan enemies at you. Sometimes switching weapons take a while so you'd be fucked if you're in a firefight. The level design isn't anything spectacular, but it should enough to keep you interested in the game.
Overall, it's got a lot of potential, but it falls short of expectations.
I intentionally don't give this game a low score, because I'm unable to rate games such as this objectively. It's just not my type of game. It's a classic old-school FPS, the likes of DOOM, Quake, Unreal and their numerous clones. It's fast-paced, it has this incessant deathmatch feel, its levels are simplistic and illogical and maze-like at the same time, enemies are numerous, ammo plentiful and the plot only serves as an excuse for level designers. These are all good and renowned staples of old shooters, but gameplay-wise it has NOTHING to do with the whole lineage of thoughtful, carefully designed, plot-heavy, exploration-encouraging FPS that arguably began with Half-Life and was picked up by companies such as Monolith and Irrational Games.
That is, just to warn those people who, like me, don't really enjoy and old-school FPS experience: this game is NOT a "Half-Life with magic", not at all. If you're looking for a proper plot-driven FPS, I suggest you don't buy Requiem.

I finished this one recently, being curious about an old FPS I hadn't heard about before.
This game is definitely in the category 'good but flawed, but mostly good'. It feels rushed in places - balance is a bit off, design is uneven, and the attempt at a good story is let down by awkward execution (given the genre and age of the game though, it's a nice try).
That said, they nailed the atmosphere and overall gameplay. The interface can be a bit cumbersome, but once you get used to it, the game rocks more often than not - some powers coupled with your shotgun play like Max Payne back in 1999, only with more variety, and others are odd but oh so efficient (like turning your opponents into salt and watching them crumble!).
Generally, it plays a bit like Half-Life (big interconnected environments, sense of place, some scripting and dialogues with NPCs - and a basic 'moral' compass with warnings about killing innocents); add a pinch of old(er)-school FPS (scattered bonuses, fast pacing, almost in-your-face difficulty). As said in the other reviews, boss-fights are really good, as they force you to think differently and adapt quickly, thus giving you a sense of fighting worthwhile adversaries.
Length-wise, it's just about right - it's a bit of a shame you don't get to visit Hell more often though, as stylistically this area is excellent. Actually, the designers have put quite a lot of effort in the look of the game. At times it feels like a cousin of Messiah - no humor there, but the same attitude on similar themes.
3/5 stars then, I would have picked 3.5 or even 4 based on the fun I had playing it, but the flaws can be distracting and hampered my experience twice. Anyway, if you enjoy old FPS and originality, or just Daemons vs Angels themes with added gore and spells, you should grab this game.
Note: according to the forum thread, some of the most glaring technical issues I had have been fixed by GOG!
I remember playing/beating this when it came out 17yrs ago - still have the cd, in fact. An above average FPS, fun boss fights, and difficulty is 'just right'. I loved it then, and I'll get it again when I catch it on sale (i'm cheap). If you like turn of the century FPS games (which many were decent, as they were the hot game genre 'round then) then you won't be disappointed. Good stuff.
