The best Prince Of Persia

All the classic Prince Of Persia games are great, but Warrior Within is on another level in terms of the gameplay. This is one of those rare games that acts as if you have just played the previous game, and starts off challenging from the beginning. The combat and platforming is as tough as anything in Sands of Time, but that's actually what make s it good. Warrior Within has isolation, atmosphere and a fallen world aesthetic. You'll explore the island of time and change the environment so you can traverse it's different time periods. It feels kind of Castlevania-esque. The only negative point is you might get lost and need to think about where you need to go but for the most part you'll be on a clear path. Most of the negativity focused on the "edge" of the characterisation of the Prince, is darker and more gritty than the affable prince from Sands of Time, but he is facing his own imminent death as part for the story, and he has to go on a journey to try and change his fate. In all seriousness, what was considered edgy back in the day would be a selling point for the game now; after Metal Gear Rising and DMCV, I think a bit of emo is actually an asset to the game. If you spend the time to beat it, it may be one of your favourite games. For all the comments about the change in style, it has the platforming completely intact and adds some really nice fluid combat; the best in these games. I think the reason it was considered not as good as Sands of Time actually just comes down to the game being harder. But in 2024, with the likes of Elden Ring, the challenge of the game isn't that steep, now, but when it came out this destroyed players. Now it's just a beautifully realised, yet dark, adventure platformer, which is like nothing else you can play on the market. Give it a go and you will love it.

Not for diehard fans, but a good game

The good: vastly improved combat system, a few well hidden special weapons, better and more challenging platforming, two different end bosses (and endings!), environment split into past (intact fortress) / present (ruins) which are different in just the right amount to have a unique feel for both. The bad: The story itself is on par with previous titles; it is the execution that's flawed. Overly sexualized female characters and crude, nearly vulgar lines will ruin the atmosphere for diehard fans. The platforming can be difficult to the point of frustration (e.g. the life extension upgrades, which are needed for the alternative ending). Occasionally lacks polish (e.g. "lore" text for the water sword, lol). A few bugs, not critical but definitely noticeable and annoying, which were never patched. Overall: An attempt to court a certain demographic gone bad, a rushed release and little after-release support probably speak to some internal anguish at Ubisoft over the direction (and sales) of the franchise. Still, I focus more on the negatives because of my disappointment - this game could have been great and it felt merely... passable to good. The successor, Two Thrones, managed to combine the better elements of WW and SoT, and generally regained fans' trust. TLDR: Get when on sale.

Souless

Everything that made the first game special is lost here. This is where Ubisoft first tried to take their popular franchises and edge them up in hopes that it would lead to more sales. And those praising this game really latched on to that edginess. But this game is edgy just for the sake of being edgy. It has nothing to say and the relatable likeable Prince is now replaced with an edgelord who kills indescriminatly because of a lack of sleep and a never ending quest to escape the Dahaka and survive. I will admit that the story here does make sense in context but they could have done so much more with it. Instead it's an excuse to make the Prince bland and edgy. This game was made for the 14 year old edgelord who thinks nothing gets any cooler than blood and heavy metal music. And while there's nothing inherently wrong with that the entire experience comes off as souless and a way to appeal to an older demographic in the most surface level way possible. The combat in the first game wasn't great and I guess it's better here now that you have combos? My problem with the combat in this game is the enemies take too many hits and block way too much. They're also thrown at you at just about every platform you jump to slowing down the flow of the platforming and the game in general. In fact this game isn't too long and if you cut out the padding from the combat encounters and the cheap deaths in the Dahaka chases you could probably run through this in 4 hours or less. The breath and soul of this game can be surmised by running away from a big scary monster while Godsmack's "I Stand Alone" instrumental blares in the background. They course corrected with the final game bringing back the original Prince voice actor and making it more like the first game. I think that tells you what you need to know about how this one was recieved and its legacy.

Warrior Within

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within is pretty solid. While Sands of Time had a more fantastical, fairy-tale-like atmosphere, this one has a much darker and somber feel to it. In this Prince of Persia game, more emphasis is placed on combat, although there is still plenty of platforming and puzzle solving here. Personally, I feel that the combat here is not all that compelling. It's pretty interesting early in the game, but after a while it get's sort of old and repetitive. The combat fails to stay interesting throughout the game, which is a big issue because so much emphasis is placed on that in this PoP game. The platforming/puzzle solving aspects of this game remain as solid as they were in Sands of Time, however. One of the best parts of this game is the environment in which the game takes place; the prince is being pursued by a demon (the Dahaka) for meddling with the sands of time, and must travel to an island (which I forget the name of) in order to set things right. The island makes for a very interesting environment in that the player gets to traverse through it in both the past and present, and both time periods offer unique and interesting versions of the island. In the game, there are also moments where the Dahaka will appear, and chase down the prince. The Dahaka is an indestructible demon, and will not stop until it's purpose (which is to kill the prince) has been fulfilled, so when this beast does appear the prince has to flee from it. These moments in the game make for some very adrenaline packed chase scenes, and while they can be a bit frustrating they are still a lot of fun. All in all, this is a good game. While personally I feel that the first one is the best of the series, this one is probably my second favorite. If you enjoy platformers or action/adventure games and you liked the first Prince of Persia game, definitely check this one out.
