An Under Appreciated Masterpiece

I went into this game expecting a short but satisfying Shooter RPG - what I got was possibly the best immersive sim I've ever played. Many people draw the System Shock comparison - I havent played System Shock yet, but I have played many other games in the genre: Deus Ex 1, HR and MK, Dishonoured 1 and 2, Thief 1 etc. If you like those games, this game is for you. It is Metroidvania-esque in its level design, and has amazing atmosphere and pacing. Exploration deserves its own point as if you don't explore, learning about who and what has been happening on Talos 1, you will have a pretty short and boring game. The beauty of this game are the stories and interactions that unfold as you explore. Never have I seen a game where the characters and the world are so interconnected - you never meet a faceless nameless NPC. EVERYONE has a backstory, so when you read about a character for ages, listen to their audio logs, find their DND character sheets, and then find their mutilated frozen corpse hours later, it hits you hard. Arkane have managed to create a protagonist with a fleshed out backstory, yet be enough of a blank slate for the player in such an engaging way that it never breaks immersion - your story is woven so neatly into the character's narative arch that they are basically inseparable, and everything is explained through time and is developed brilliantly. I played on Hard mode with the Survival options turned On. I highly recommend this to those experienced with immersive sim games - ammo becomes scarce, and entering combat becomes very risky. This game is one of my favourite games in years. It has some amazing moments if you allow yourself to get lost in the amazing world it has created. Music cues are absolutely on point and always elevate the moment (the music is by Mick Gordon - it is incredible). Also, it isnt scary, despite being labelled as horror. I hate horror games, I hate jumpscares. Dont let it put you off, it is more of a thriller. A true gem

What an impressive game.

It's an immersive first person shooter with memorable maps, characters, and enemies. I enjoyed playing through this two or three times just to try out different approaches to the choices in the game, both relating to the story and the ability progression. The action is good too with guns and abilities that feel impactful and fun to use, and enemies will give you a significant challenge from time to time. It's definitely a game that rewards thinking enemy encounters through. I didn't expect to find one of my favorite shooters of all time, but it was really excellent. On top of that, lots of characters have little sub-plots that reveal themselves throughout the game, showing that the devs really put a lot of thought into the world.

Best immersive sim to date...

Absolute masterpiece by Arkane Studios. Great gameplay mechanics, great challenge, great story and interesting side stories. The graphics and performance are excellent with the cry engine. Mooncrash is an excellent addition to the game as it changes a lot to the game and has great replayibility.

Visceral, if you can appreciate it

I just beat this game on nightmare with about 45 hours in it. Being a completionist, I did almost everything I could, so now that I'm done, I'm just going to give some of my thoughts about it. What can I say? It's a psychological thriller that allows you to play in different ways thanks to its RPG/FPS mix of elements. The highlight of my experience with it is that it has one of the best narratives I've seen in games. Yes, there's some repetition, but it's good. And yes, you're confused. That's also good. This is necessary for you to decide on what actions to take and to understand what has happened better. These objectives and the confusion/repetition also make the world feel "full," helping with the lore and at the same time wanting to learn more about it. Lots of the objectives are optional, so you're definitely not forced to do anything you don't want to. I decided to do them all that I could, however. With that being said, it reminds me of Deus Ex. In fact, I'd say it's a combination of two other games' elements, too (and probably many more): Dead Space and Dishonored. Other afterthoughts: After playing it and learning all about the story of the game, I'd love to see what Prey's story would be like with a prequel or a sequel. Since I finished the game, I don't feel that I'd necessarily want to relive the story because I'm left with a down feeling of how this all could have gotten to such a tipping point and at what cost it in this fictional universe (depending on the ending you get, but all of it is gloomy in my opinion). Additionally, I find that some areas really evoke a feeling of loneliness and helplessness when you're overwhelmed by enemies. I'm not sure how one could stay sane if this were a real life situation. Just look at this game for its story and environment. They're beautiful.

Don't Rush

I love this game. What I enjoy most about it is, the game is designed so that you have to back track to areas you've already played. I relished how the environment changes in areas you've already explored, as the game progresses. I was able to take my time and appreciate all the beautiful work that went into it. If your the type of player that wants to rush to the end, this is not the game for you and your missing out. I am enamored with games that let you move at your own pace.
