In its current state I'd say the game is fun for an evening or two, but not much more. My campaigns became boring quite quickly. Island and sea battles just seem to play exactly the same each time.
As I bought it for 2€ when it was on sale I cannot really complain about price / value, but I wouldn't by it at full price currently. Maybe in a year or so...
A broken unfinished mess abandoned by the developers, reportedly with updates on other services, such as Steam, that weren't pushed to GOG.
After reading an article on Rock, Paper, Shotgun, I KickStarted this title. I regret being an early supporter.
The core engine appears to be broken (opinion from myself and other developers) and rather than rewrite it, they created a large misshapen band-aid ball. To add insult to injury, the developer of Terraria (the company is Re-Logic), one of my favorite games, decided to publish and endorse this title.
The icing on the cake: As this awful title hobbled along, an announcement came from Re-Logic for Pixel Privateers, a new title in development.
As an apology to owners, an "enhanced edition" was released "for free" - Really?!? What?!? The game is broken. It was not fixed. It isn't possible to fix this title without rewriting the engine, which I imagine is what they did for their next title. What an awful mess... and this also really lowered my opinion on Re-Logic, as well.
My opinion - Avoid this title and consider avoiding the developers, whatever they may do. As always, YMMV.
Very little content, repetitive and boring gameplay, little enemy and ship variety, no real stat diversity for your characters, still has some bugs (nothing too serious, game auto saves and you can recover immediately by loading).
Character creation is kinda terrible, there is very little variety and what little there is, is annoying to sort through due to limited controls.
The game also has no ending, the goal you get at the start (defeat the 4 legends) doesn't go anywhere, there is no reward for it, nothing special happens, no story conclusion, nothing at all.
What little the game offers is amusing for a little while but thats the only positive thing I can say about the game, it has its charm but it runs dry very quickly.
I can't really recommend this game to anyone.
No updates or fixes. This game is unplayable on linux, null vertical bug, no islands, stretched textures as hell, unusable weapons, crew are jumping into water or catching cannonballs on face. It has few years and still no big support from devs. And now they are making next game?! Pathetic...
An interesting little game with some good ideas, it ultimately feels a bit vacant. It's a decent enough distraction for a time - anyone who has ever spent time in study hall playing a game they programmed on their TI can get an idea of what I mean by that.
You "sweep" your group of pirates across various environs and let them have at any enemies they encounter. Take care of them and they level up, you can teach them new skills and the gear they use will improve. It all sounds well and good, especially the concept of having dedicated groups for tending ship, providing food and boarding vessels but in the end I found little compelling reason to keep at it. I should have wanted to level that new weapon which offered lower damage but a chance to stun, I should like to learn what the fishing skill does, heck I even should have been curious about outfitting my vessel with cannon and sail. But in the end I couldn't muster the enthusiasm to do so.
So it remains a bit of a diversion, a pick up and play for a few minutes at a time. I suppose it's decent enough at that, and as much as I wanted to enjoy some of the deeper mechanics there just wasn't enough of a game there to warrant me doing so. A bit of a shame really as the prospect of leveling my crew, dedicating little guys to their tasks and earning (or pirating!) the largest ship on the seas seemed fun enough. Heck, I even had a great little moment when I forgot to pay my crew their wages or let them enjoy themselves in port; when my one loyal mate was cut down during the ensuing mutiny before I remembered I could pay them and make them happier I even had a brief glimpse of what could have made the game great. But, there was just too little too late. Or maybe a lot there, but no reason to really explore it.
I'd probably give it a 2.5 out of 5 rather than 2, but I couldn't justify that 3.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
