Wonderful exploration of a genre game
First of, i played this game on the Nintendo Switch so this review will not touch upon the performance of the PC version of the game. I still felt that i needed to sing this games praises. The crime-solving genre is a deeply fascinating genre of game.s With a very mild gameplay aspect, more akin to a interactive novel where you press things and exhaust all the dialouge option through a set-in-stone story with a set-in-stone ending. The question is not how are you gonna solve the case, its more about how will you slither your way towards the path and predetermined ending. Now, i love myself some Phoenix Wright or Sherlock Holmes. But while those experiences are quite limited, Paradise Killer offers something else. You Play Lady Love Dies, a exiled detective and former inhabitant of Paradise 25. You have been pardoned and sent back to Paradise 25 to solve the murder of the Council, the discreet group in charge of the island. You arrive back on Paradise 25 with the goal to reconnect with your old friends and see whom of them are the culprit of this grizzly murder. The story ooze with a creative flair that can be a bit jarring before everything gets sorted. This world is not ours and to learn its rules and virtues is something that embraces you in the story and makes you want to get to the bottom of this crime so you can get a complete picture of not just why this murder took place but also how this world works. But what makes this game shine and really stand out is the boundaryless world that we inhabit. The world makes it so easy for you to explore. Its gorgeous, and its a vaporwave aesthetic helps bring a colourful and joyful world that makes you want to explore every nook and cranny. And it lets you do that. You walk around the world solving it and finding clues in your own tempo in a way that feels freeing from the boundaries often existing in these kind game. No fall damage was also a stroke of genius and makes everything so much easier.
