Exercise in frustration and obscurity.

Ok, so I purchased this title from a different vendor - but I feel there needs to be this negative review HERE - so others will not be swept away by the great ratings. This IS a decent title - but frustrating - is an understatment. If you are not strong in memory capacity or math, for that matter - or if you hate riddles and mazes - don't purchase this - you will hate it. I think it misrepresents itself in that aspect and is an exercise in patience. It is beautiful to look at and and a marvel of ingenuity for those that LOVE PUZZLES. I can say that I figured most things out quickly - but that my wife almost broke the screen - hence, another reason, for this review. Games are supposed to be fun - not an exercise in anger or frustration. Keep a notebook - screenshot certain areas and, fianlly, use YoutTube to look things up when you are absolutely stuck - and you may just have a decent time. Not reccomended for casual gamers. The negatives - imho - far outweigh the pros- I cannot advise this purchase. I give 2 stars because while I was able to finish it I cannot say i felt anything - but relief - that it was over. Convoluted clues - and simply irritating mazes abound. Overall? - Bleh.

Defiantly not for me.

I want to preface the review with I got the game for free with the GOG giveaway. While I have only given the game an hour before I got completely bored, I can't really see the fun in it. With a large open map, and limited things to interact with, most of the time I spent was clicking on anything that you could possibly touch, just to find out most of the game cannot be interacted with. The game is beautiful, and there are lot of things to catch your eye, but that's were the problem is nothing leads you in one direction. I only worked out where I was meant to go after I had been around the map twice, followed the flying bug to a dead end, messed with every bit of the fire truck, the lasers, used all the track switchers, open the waterfall. To find out I had not interacted with the flood gate correctly after wasting an hour. This is all down to the problem with poor movement controls when interacting with objects, sometimes things just didn't work and took multiple attempts to get working. At that point I was done, when you are making such little progress that it becomes a guessing game of trail and error. I can only say this game is not for me.

This game moves as slowly as Myst did

If Obduction ® used an open-world game engine it could have moved alot faster. I didn't feel like checking out side paths anymore unless I really had to because they usually didn't seem to have purpose, causing me to backtrack and waste more time. I will give it an extra star for have dx9 looking scenery, but not alot to interact with. The point and click interface makes (movement?) so boring. It's just not fun when you spend most of the game waiting to get to the next artifact. GOG gave me this for free so I wanna say "thanks", but I don't think I can continue playing this. I may not live long enough to finish it.

A beautiful exploration game

Obduction is a beautiful puzzle game that mostly focuses on exploration. I would not really say that Obduction is a Myst-like game, especially in term of the puzzles. You start the game as the last “arriver“ in an apparent dead town on an alien world, after having been abducted for an unknown reason from your home world. And so you will have to explore this strange world to figure out where you are and what happened to all the other arrivers through any diaries, notes, videos and recordings you find. I absolutely loved the exploration part of the game. While uncovering the story and learn about the life of the arrivers, there are 4 different worlds to discover, with 3 different alien species to learn about. But if you do not like walking simulators, you might not enjoy the game much, because in Obduction, you walk a lot, going many times back and forth between places. At the end of the game, you will definitely have the whole map of the different worlds in your head. There are two main types of puzzles in the game. First, you have to figure out some code that will unlock some door or bridge, by piecing together the clues you find while exploring around. Then, there are the teleportation puzzles which consist of teleporting between worlds and switching the spherical area around teleporters to modify the environment. I found them quite interesting as they make you juggle with the surroundings between worlds. The downside is that they may take a long time given the necessary walking back and forth between teleporters and the long loading time for teleportations that can take 30 secondes to 2 minutes... Obduction might not be for everyone given the long loading times and the huge amount of walking required, but if you like exploration games, are curious and patient enough, you should try it out!

It`s quite good, but...

This is a puzzle solitary game. no shooting, no fighting (not that I can see). just a `place` that`s eerily silent and you`re plonked in it without a clue. It`s basically another version of Myst. You see almost no living sentient being except maybe one guy. And he`s not much use. What i don`t like about games like these is the rare NPC that refuses to divulge information for `gameplay` even though it would help them to. They really kill immersion. If it was real they`d explain a lot more about what`s happening. However, if you put the time into exploring and figuring how to get things working, there are some amazing sights to see and interact with, especially in VR. One such sight had me gawking like a small kid. VR as well as Normal mode works. VR is a bit hit and miss sometimes and always needs resetting. Some settings don`t stick if you prefer to `walk` rather than `hop` around; you have to keep re-enabling them whenever you take the HMD off. also where you look moves your direction; again really annoying if you want to move `naturally`. you can`t switch it off. Other than that, pretty good, the game needs its people to act more like people and VR to actually stick to the control mode you select.
