I hope young people would play the game

Back in the day, there was a game called Beyond Good and Evil. I was about 12 when I played it, and... It became the first source, the first piece of art, that explained to me that sometimes the official govt media may lie and why they might want to do it. Basically, that game (and not my parents, older friends, or teachers) introduced me to the idea of propaganda. I didn't fully realize it then, but now, looking back, I just can't overestimate the importance of that educational aspect that BGE brought to me. The Liberated may not be as soulful and masterfully crafted as BGE, but it could serve the same purpose for younger players. This game explains in a very streamlined manner things like propaganda, how aggressively it can be protected, how dangerous it might be to not buy into propaganda tales and fight against it. This aspect and the absolutely gorgeous comics visuals outweigh the drawbacks of the game, of which there are plenty, unfortunately. * The game likes to soft lock, either during the active gameplay or during the "reading" mode. * In the beginning, the game presents us some running mechanics that I never used after that clumsy learning section. * There's stealth, but it's mostly rudimentary and you can shoot almost everybody. There are hard sections where stealth might help, but those sections were designed to put you into direct confrontation, which is weird. * In the first chapter, the playable character does NOT look like the main character during the comics section which. This ruins the immersion in the story. The story might feel too naive and simple if you're a sophisticated player and/or an experienced book reader, but! Even if you are, you may treat it as "easy reading" literature, a sort of page-turner. Such stories are designed to entertain, so why treat them too seriously? And again, if you're a young person and haven't consumed too many games/books yet, high chances you'll enjoy this story more, as it carries a potent message.

Liberated

the gameplay is really juste here to distract from the somewhat forward reading and the goal is totaly achieved for me. The story is nice and the black and white type comics makes a really great aura to the game. To me Liberated is a welle balanced gameplay/story/time to finish (at least the 4 first chapters. Thanks for that game

Good History

Never played something like this "comic like" and i like the mechanic and the narrative. The gameplay is not good but also not as bad as some reviews say. A side scroll with shooting and 4 or 5 puzzles here and there which is entertaining at first but gets boring by the end of the game. Had some bugs and technical problems probably cause my resolution (4k) but the history was worth. If you like the idea of an interactive comic i would try it at least

Very expensive visual novel, very poor game

The say "Adventure - Action - Sci-fi", but it 80% a visual novel. The good: somehow innovative narrative approach, very nice art. The bad: very short (3-4 hours), story is OK but bland; gameplay is repetitive (same kind of enemies, each encounter is not a surprise), AI ranges between OK and lame ; buggy (see below), no choice or little, QTE at the wrong time, they tell you can hide but there is 0 (zero) stealth. You are forced into using this or that weapon, you may no carry even two of them. Conclusion: 20$/€ is way too much. I bought it for 10€ and was angry at me not to have tried the demo. May be 5 ? I stopped at the end of the story (4 chapters) and do not plan to read the DLCs. Bugs: controller as no dead zone - I had to use Joy2Key just for that. Animation is OK, but the character continues to run when you make it stop (really, it walks/run on place). Every move has a un-interruptible time, so you may not change your current action.

ALMOST good, but just OK

Liberated's premise is a familiar one. A totalitarian state rules the near future and it's up to you and a ragtag group of characters to start a revolution in hopes of shutting down the government and regaining freedom. While the premise is nothing out of the ordinary, the story is actually pretty well executed and characters behave in a realistic way. It does a good job of mirroring current society and speculating how things might go without feeling like pandering or talking down to the audience (which is sadly a rare thing these days for this sort of tale). The art direction is probably what sells this game. The narrative is told in a gritty comic book style with monochromatic visuals in order to bette reflect the established dystopian scenario. Voice acting is pretty good too and helps sell the tone even better. Unfortunately, the gameplay is where things start to fall apart. The game starts promising, perfectly mixing elements of stealth and action with some light puzzles, but as soon as gunplay is introduced, stealth is out the window for good. Forget about choosing whether to hide, run or shoot. It's shoot or die. Even in the few times you're given a place to hide, it's basically just to delay the inevitable shooting for a few seconds. There's nothing inherently bad about this kind of gameplay, but the problem is that the setting and tone of the game work better with at least the choice of stealth. The "Inside"-style level design seems tailored to encourage stealth as well. And it's what the game promises at the start, so you feel like you've been baited and switched. Furthermore, controls aren't so good, making the pedestrian gunplay even less interesting, so there's that. I think it's an alright first try for the developer, and I hope they take notes for their next title. They're promising, but they need to make a better effort next time. It's clear storytelling and visuals are their forte, so perhaps their next game should be a graphic adventure.
