My name is Lemeza Kosugi and when I am not busy teaching archeology, I seek out undiscovered ruins and their secrets. Not too long ago, a note arrived from my long-lost father, exclaiming “Eventually, I found it. I’ve won!”. Seems like the old man finally did it: he found La-Mulana, the ancient temple that holds the ancient knowledge hidden from mankind for all these years. With my trusty laptop and my whip, I have set out to plumb the depths of this ancient temple to see what treasures I can find...

La-Mulana is an “Archaeological Ruin Exploration Action Game” in the vein of classic MSX platformers. As a daring archaeologist you venture inside the ancient ruins of the Mayan city La-Mulana, seeking out the Secret Treasure of Life. Apart from the plethora of traps lying in wait to stop intruders, there are also monsters on the prowl, protecting the ruins. Head for the innermost depths of the ruins while solving a variety of mysteries, fending off monsters, and disarming traps. Forging ahead will be no simple task – the further into the depths you reach, the more difficult the mysteries become. Will you fall prey to treacherous traps and gruesome guardians or unravel the secrets of La-Mulana?

Controls ruined it for me

What seemed like a promising metroidvania with rave reviews turned out to be a major disappointment. The reivews voted most helpful praised the smooth controls, but I found them to be the least enjoyable of all the platformers I remember playing. All those reviews were from 2012. Another new one from 2019 states that the controls were very stiff. Wish I read that before buying. I'm not sure whether something has happened in the years between, but most of these issues seem design choices: - When jumping, you have no control whatsoever mid-air - When you're near enough the ledge to fall over it, you fall straight down like a rock - When you move between screens, all enemies are restored to full health - When you fall on an enemy, you take damage, they won’t, even if they’re so squishy they should now be splattered under your boots When you begin to jump, fall, or are hit by an enemy, your trajectory is fixed and you can’t do anything until your feet hit the ground. This often means falling off-screen, back to where you came from. That, in turn, means that all the enemies of that screen are back to full health, as are those you were just fighting in the next screen. At worse getting hit or missing a dodge in one screen can take you several screens back. Having to replay the same screens again and again is not my idea of fun. You also can’t jump onto platforms from below. Combined with the restrictive controls this means that many platforms that look easily accessible cannot be used at all. This made the beginning of the game feel artificially restrictive. Because it didn’t feel fun at all, I didn’t venture further. Try a demo before you buy. The controls and design choices of La-Mulana are not for everyone.

What a true 10/10 looks like

A lot of games these days are under the mistaken impression that you need to appeal to everyone. La-Mulana is not one of them. This is a game with a vision all of its own. There are only three types of people that should play this game: -3000 IQ galaxy brained geniuses -People who want to see what a game made by the above type of person would look like -Hardcore Metroidvania superfans looking for the greatest challenge of their lives If you're not one of the above, it's not for you. If you are, this will probably be the greatest game you've ever played, as it was for me. Understand what comes with the territory in a game like this. It's absolutely unintuitive. You will get tons of hints, many of which are extremely vague and at times the wording may even be misleading. The combat is brutal due to lack of air control, poor range on your main weapons and everything dealing contact damage (though the game does gift you with a particular subweapon that generally makes bosses much easier). But also see the flip side of this. The world is designed such that every screen is full of detail and brimming with interactivity. You will be engaged with and think harder about this game than any laughable "narrative-driven" game with "deep" moral choices. The combat... is still not very fun, but it can be a nice break from having to think and provides tension and spectacle that a pure puzzle game could not. I understand the devs were heavily inspired by the game Knightmare II: Maze of Galious in making this, and the game's design is even more understandable in light of this. However, this game's outstanding 16-bit pixel graphics and immaculate OST are something all of its own and can be appreciated regardless of who you are. I generally don't give out 5/5s. I didn't give one to Deus Ex or System Shock II. But something like this? Once in a lifetime. No game will ever capture the feeling of exploring lost ruins better. Are you ready to claim that feeling for yourself?

Almost awesome game

I loved Maze of Galious, I liked the Unepic a lot and I really enjoyed La-Mulana which was inspired by Maze of Galious mostly. But the puzzles went way too far in this game - no way in hell anyone can even get close to finishing the game without looking into a walk-through. Want a great MoG-like game - yes, it is! Want to do everything yourself and solve all the puzzles yourself, not bloody likely!

Meh

Got this as a random game in the "India Pinata". Basicaly i paid 3$ for a 1$ game. Tried the game for an hour and deleted it. I did like the retro look, but the game feels too stiff. I wish there were more checkpoints and that , when i died, i didn't have to go to titlescreen to reload it; a simple continue would be much better. I wouldn't say the game is bad, but i personaly don't like it. There are much better games of this type out there

Linux version still broken.

First of all: I really like this game and I would give it 4 stars if not for 4 issues I have with this game: Issue 1 : Insane amount of back-tracking Issue 2: major impact throwback after being hit. Issue 3: timed spoils upon defeating enemy. Issue 4: This game cannot be completed on Linux due to a game-braking bug first reported on Steam in May 2015: see: https://steamcommunity.com/app/230700/discussions/1/620713633846327367/ Last reply from the devs: first august 2016. No resolution or viable workaround so far that I know of. Issues 1-3 are matters of opinion. Issue 4 is a blocker bug that should have prevented the release of the Linux version in the current state. This is such a shame, because the game does have a lot to offer: The pixel-art graphics are top-notch and improve quite a lot on the MSX-styled original. While the game is quite hard, the game is consistent within it's world rules. I just love the action-based riddles that are presented to you, although some puzzles are a bit too obtuse for my taste. La-Mulana is quite big and has distinctly different segments of the map when it comes to atmosphere and monsters. The in-game music is catchy and I like the software concept, but not the menu controls. Every pressable button should have been in the button reconfig. So all-in-all, a good game that could have been great with a little polish in the controls. One star deduction for a game-braking Linux bug version that still has not be addressed.
