Worth the asking price

Now I know this is one of those "commercial" remakes of what was a free game like Cave Story+ and you can still get the original for free but unlike Cave Story+ which was really the original game with update graphics,a optional remixed soundtrack and two new modes and not much else this version of La Mulana is more of a proper remake. The guys who did this version did more then just updated the graphics they did improvements to the controls(well they feel tighter to me), the jumping, added a few hints through "e-mails" for the early part of the adventure, the MSX roms have been changed to flash games(yeah not that much of a change but still), quite a few of the bosses have been altered from just minor changes like the twin dragons now being on separate sides of the screen as opposed to being connected and sliding down one side of the screen to the other and the "devil" boss(can't remember the boss's actual name) to having a second form to complete revamps like Tiamat who's form and attacks is completly diffrent from her orginal counterpart, and there is also more save points which is a bit of a blessing where in the orginal you had to buy a save rom for your "MSX" place it in the system and then talk to the village elder now you just simply go to the save stone which you can find at least one off in every level. So in short while the game is quite faithful to the original there are some noticeable differences. So okay how does it actually play? It plays like a dream, a very hard dream but a dream none the less. If you ever played any post Synthony of the night Castlevania, the MSX Castelvania Vampire Killer, or Metriod you will be familiar with how this game plays if not then this game is a non linear exploration based action platformer. Where you can explore the game world as you please but the catch is you can't access certain areas or gain certain items until you find a certain power up, item, ability or solve a certain puzzle but while the gameplay itself is similar to Symphony of the night or Metriod the puzzles are more along the lines of a Zelda game and that is a good thing, puzzles can range from simply whipping a block in the "mouth" of a stone face which will activate a platform allowing you to access a certain area to more intricate affairs but never do you feel like the game is cheap or the puzzles mind numbing convoluted plus there are hints that can be found often on the remains of unlucky explorers, on stone tablets or even npc that can be found in various levels though the hints in this version are not as plain as they are in the fan translated version of the orginal, for example there is a puzzle where you have to whip four objects in a set order this order is found on the body of a skeleton close by, in the original it told you plainly hit this first, then this, this and then that in the remake it's done in a form of a fable about certain elements destroying the sun or something to that effect so you have to think about it a bit more so make sure you read the hints very carefully. Then there is the music the new remade tunes are just as catchy and well done as the orginals in some cases even more catchier. Now the only thing I didn't like was the fact that the game is in windowed mode by default and it can be easy to enter areas that you may not be ready for with little chance of escape until you find the holy grail which allows you to warp through areas you have already "marked" but these are minor complaints. All in all this is a amazing game and a great example of how to do a proper remake, take what made the original so great and improve on what needs to be improves on.

Mainly for masochists

Well, I finished the game. I even ventured into a few rooms the Hell temple. However without excessive help of Wikis and walkthroughs I would have been stuck at 30% of the game or so. And without some savegame cheating (money is at 0x10e5..0x10e6) I would have stopped playing a little later (Viy). That I continued despite of all the unfairness and stupid puzzles is not because of the quality of the game but because I find it hard to leave something unfinished. There are certainly good points about La Mulana: it has a lot of large animated bosses and sub-bosses, it's relatively large, it has a proper savepoint and teleporter system. Then again, there's a lot to not like about this game. Most enemies are either looking silly or unsuitably cute. Headless horses, cows that shit fire, submarine goats. Jeff Minter style. Some parts are ridiculously hard which is sharpened by the fact that there is only one save point per area. Sometimes you need to traverse several areas where you need to fight the same annoying foes and do the same jumping over and over again until you finally reach the place where you failed before. There is not even a save point before or after a boss fight. And after the final boss, chances are you will die trying to find a way out of the ruins and have to repeat the final fight several times. Also the puzzles are badly designed. Most of them are plain crazy and involve breaking or jumping into walls at random places. There are clues but usually the type that barely makes sense after you found the solution. Another example for bad design: your inventory is stuffed with quest items you need only once or twice, but you keep them forever. And you need to use them explicitly. Partly in combination with "software". Which is another annoying design idea. Combining software pieces you found improves weapons or enables certain things, so you need to re-arrange your software all the time. Heck, even leaving the game or loading a savegame is a pain.

For people who like to be punished

I've played almost 4 hours of this game now, and all I feel right now is frustration. The platforming is very punishing. Trap placement is very punishing. Many of the puzzles don't have intuitive solutions. And at the end of it all, I just don't feel very rewarded for my efforts. Finding new treasures or items isn't particularly satisfying. I don't really know what areas I'm supposed to go to. I just...I want to like this game because I like "metroidvania" style games, but I just can't get into the brutal nature of this one. Maybe if the punishment didn't send you all the way back to the sparsely-scattered save points and made you trek all the way through all the treacherous tedium you just went through, maybe I'd have more patience for this one. But as it stands, I just think I'm going to shelf this one where I am and move on to other things. Sorry, La-Mulana

If you don´t wanna use guides, play it.

This game is hard, not because the combat is hard nor because the platforming is bad, but because is a Metroidvania where you must read and remember every single bit of information to solve its puzzles. If you are interested, keep reading, if not don´t worry, maybe this game wasn´t your cup of tea anyways. La-Mulana is a Metroidvania that rewards you if you have an eye on every single corner that could hide a clue. In the ruins of La-Mulana you will find visual and written info that expose the solution of pretty much every puzzle, but always explained in riddles that may not be so obvious the first time you found them, if you manage to connect the dots, your path will be opened to new areas, puzzles, and most probably rewards. The aesthetic department is heavily inspired by 2d games of the 5th generation, with cartoony sprites and well polished backgrounds. I could describe the OST as heroic, it invites you to be an adventurer that reveal secrets hidden ages ago (Also you can download it as an included goodie, 224 minutes of pure musical joy). The Metroidvania features are strong in this game. There are dozens of upgrades to improve your character and, because there are hundreds of puzzles the items are a fundamental keys to resolve them. Many are hidden only for the most curious of the players. The game is pretty long and with more than a dozen of different areas, each one with its own music, enemies, style, and bosses, you can explore them or fight its bosses in many different ways if you have the knowledge and the tools to do it, making each run a bit different every time. I would talk more about the game, but even after almost 6 years since the first time I played this game I still haven´t managed to complete the game, I COULD use a guide and finish it, but that would kill my favorite aspect of this masterpiece. In conclusion, play this game only if you want a good challenge. PD: DON'T READ AGAIN "THAT" TABLET OF THE MAUSOLEUM OF GIANTS IN YOUR FIRST RUN!

I see why they call this a cult classic

Gameplay-wise this is a metroidvania platformer with a big emphasis on solving puzzles and riddles and less of an emphasis on tight platforming and combat. The part I loved the most about the game was the theme and overall feel of it. You really feels like you are Indiana Jones, adventuring through beautifully-drawn ancient ruins in search for priceless artifacts, while solving riddles and avoiding deadly traps. Equipped with only your whip and your trusty wits. Everything fees epic (specially the boss fights) and the soundtrack is also great. And before I forget, it is also available on Linux! The part I hated the most about the game is that sometimes it gives off that old-school "unfair" feeling. I feels awful to die to an instant-kill trap just after a very difficult boss fight and some of the puzzles are impossible to figure out without an walkthrough (I would highly recommend the hint-based guide that Cheshire published on the Steam forums). I do have to confess that meticulously taking notes and drawing maps by hand was more fun than I expected it would be though... Finally I would like to give a heads-up to other Linux users: In version 2.0.0.1 there is a bug where Lemeza can get stuck on moving platforms if he falls on them right after taking damage and when that happens the only way to get unstuck is taking damage again or warping with the Holy Grail. Luckily, this isn't a deal breaker but it does make traversing some areas of the game more frustrating and the Inferno Cavern boss fight gets *much* more challenging than it would be otherwise. That said, from what I have heard the Windows version of the game works fine under Wine so feel free to try to use that if you run across this problem.
