PROS: Gratifying, engaging game with a stylistic retro feel, fun puzzles, well developed story, and good length.
CONS: Could use a tutorial or more detailed instructions at the beginning.
This game should appeal to anyone who enjoys retro, pixel-graphic, point-and-click adventure games. If you enjoy games like Whispers of a Machine, Lamplight City, or the Blackwell series, then the Kathy Rain games are for you. If you have already enjoyed the first Kathy Rain, you should be pleased with this sequel. Having played the first game isn't required to understand this game; there is an optional recap of the first game when you start. However, I recommend playing the first game before starting this one.
The game mechanics are similar to the first. If you haven't played the first game, it may take a little more time to understand how to interact with everything and progress. I think it should have a tutorial or a bit more of instruction at the beginning. The puzzles are logical and enjoyable. Like most adventure games, solutions require you to pay attention to what you are being told, what's interactive on the screen, where you can go, and what's in your inventory.
This game is much longer than the first and has more improved, detailed graphics. Despite the latter, it still very much retains the stylistic and retro look of its predecessor. This story takes place in 1998, three years after the events where first met Kathy Rain, and satisfyingly connects to those events. It builds on the characters of Kathy Rain, giving us some additional insight into her psyche. Other characters (no spoilers) from the first make an appearance and are also built upon, and still others are referenced, giving the story a nice polish. New characters are effectively introduced by the writers. The voice acting is believable for all characters, although at times a bit cliché but fitting.
I felt intrigued by the mystery, was engaged emotionally, and I was pleasantly touched by the ending.
An amazing engaging story, that will keep you hooked until the end.
A great sequel, the two games complement each other well, and the link is there but you don't need to play the first, as there is an optional recap.
The puzzles are fun, varied and blend well with the story and have meaning.
All the characters are interesting and relatable, and if they were in the original they are fleshed out more.
The music compliments the time period and settings well.
Well worth the money and then some!
I had a lot of fun with this sequel, especially the story line to me seemed much more enjoyable than the story of the first part. Classic adventure game, puzzles neither too easy nor too difficult and fit to the story. The story recap of the first part is a fine thing too. So I really recommend this if you are looking for a classic detective adventure.
... but intense
I finished the game the other day and it was quite alright. It's not the best p&c adventure I have played this year, but it's a solid one. The riddles are never unfair, you get plenty of hints on how to get through a certain situation. Most riddles are limited to one or two locations, only a few require you to run around and grab stuff. It's less of a "combine A with B and see what happens" game, instead most of the story progress comes from talking to people or finding clues.
There are a few number puzzles, which are not all too difficult to solve. But you actually need to read the hints in the game, like dates or what part of a code uses what as references, Kathy won't tell you that. She only confirms that you did the right thing, but she hardly ever says what you are missing.
I withed it was a bit longer though. Or maybe it just does not feel as long as similar games, BECAUSE it was so straight forward to solve.
The two games - especially this second one - give the feeling that we are talking about a series here, but it's really just two games and even the two cases are connected.
More of this please, also with storylines not related to what was going on in the first game.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
