Really I'm only rating it that high because of Lynch. Also because I expected it to be grittier and edgier. Instead this whole thing played out more or less like a really bad American action movie complete with cringey not-Venezuela not-Cuba where of course your guy is connected to CIA and Illuminati types because reasons. I never would've bought this game had I realized that I was not in fact just playing a realistic portrayal of two psychopathic criminals in a raw, dirty way, but instead just a really dumb and cringey over the top American action movie. Also no, the shooting is bad, the cover is bad, the mechanics is bad, none of this feels like it was "intentionally done for realism of chaotic firefights" but instead just done badly and this is all the more laughable when cops just stand there in the middle of the road, NPCs just stand there shooting at you or run all the way across the map out of cover. Lynch is the only really redeeming quality, and I don't personally think it's necessary to play this first in order to play Kane and Lynch 2. Like even Kane is somehow supposed to be a guy "just trying to save his daughter" like he's this cringe American action-dad some reddit posting office worker would dream himself up with who'd get mugged by a 16 yo kid. Maybe they did it to try and make him more "relateable" or give some narrative direction but frankly the shallow emphasis on Kane trying to find his daughter killed the sole thing this game had going for it, which was a half effort at grittiness. Like why tf am I supposed to believe this guy that just skipped out on his daughter all her life and couldn't even bother to write a card would care now? Spoilers but unsurprising, he doesn't even bother to associate with his daughter after this game either. He's an unloveable psychopath, that's supposed to be the point. Pass on this one, even at $2

Just avoid

There are only two good aspects of this game - really cool story and characters. It might be a great movie but sadly it just turned out to be an awful videogame. Shooting and overall combat are just unpleasant, levels are bland (with few exceptions) but the worst of all is that this game is just technical mess. Game stutters like crazy, controller can't be recognized and your savedata might get lost suddenly (i've lost 3 hours of gameplay and it turns out that cloud saves from the GOG Galaxy or even savegames from internet aren't working... after that i just gave up on this abysmal piece of code).

shameful shooter

This game uses same shooting mechanics from freedom fighters and hitman games, it's just fully random braindead bullet spread, cover mechanic is a joke, ai companions are clowns, story is a mess if start thinking about it. But main characters are so cool, edgy and mental, wow.

Tries To Be Edgy But Fails Miserably

Back in 2007, the reviews were harsh towards the game and it was responsible for the firing of game editor Jeff Gerstmann at GameSpot because he too didn't like the game (although it was not revealed until 2012). I thought they were exaggerating but after playing it recently, I concur with the reviews. Kane & Lynch: Dead Men is quite bad. While the controls are responsive for the most part, the cover mechanics feel clunky and the AI are brain-dead. Your allies rush straight for the enemies and vice versa. Unbelievable! The game tries to be edgy by having 2 annoying and unlikeable characters but it doesn't work. It's not like Tony Montana from Scarface where you root for him even though he's ruthless; Kane & Lynch have no redeeming qualities whatsoever. They're badass but dumb, and they're so angry all the time and they do stuff without thinking ahead. The levels are not fun either with little to no memorable moments. The graphics look dated as well. It doesn't hold up as much as the sequel Dog Days, which I recommend getting. Feel free to skip this mess and go straight for the sequel as it has little to no continuity except for the anti-heroes.
