3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.
Welcome to ION FURY!
Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.
Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.
Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.
Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
True tracked module music!
Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!
I was waiting for this game to go on sale to pick it up, but now that I hear that they will not be caving to the outrage mob, I will gladly buy this at full price! Never apologize to the mob. They are never satisfied. Also, I freakin' love this game!
Game is great, would put it gameplay wise closer to Duke and Shadow Warrior than Blood. Gameplay is tight and satisifiying. Level design is great espicially the levels set in downtown Neo DC. Weapons are on the basic side but are all satsifiying. The only two weapons I felt that really stood out from the rest are the starting pistol and the ion bow. A good selection of enemies from the standart cultist variations to some that feel to be Quake inspired.
Only two real things I didn't like and neither were major deal breakers. The first is that although the game runs great during a couple of hte boss fight there were some frame rate issues. The second is after having the open city levels spending a good part of the game either underground or in various labs felt kind of disappointing
I went in expecting a nostalgic throwback to olden days of gaming. Some quick, moderately fun no-bullshit action. At first, i got what i expected. It was sorta fun and the nostalgic factor kept me playing. And boy, am i glad it did, because this game grew on me like none other. I absolutely love it now.
The weapon balance in this is nothing short of genius. All weapons are useful, good even, throughout the entire game. At no point you feel like you're in trouble because you're out of ammo for that one weapon you tend to rely on. Nope, even the revolver you get in the first level stays very relevant through the whole thing. I think it's not an exaggeration to say this game is the best game ever in that regard. Absolutely brilliant.
The level design is something to behold. It's like duke nukem, but better and prettier in almost every way. There are some level tropes that get "repeated" a bit too often (most very-open space between buildings look sorta alike), but aside from that, levels are always fun to explore. Welp, i did get lost sometimes, foiled by hard-to-spot switches or not being able to find the one specific elevator i unlocked among all the others that still didn't work, but it happens so few times i didn't find it a problem.
The one downside is the enemy design. They're all pretty bland. The game relies too heavily on color coded cloaked person-dudes, each using one of your weapons. And they barely move, they just stand there and shoot you from wherever they are. Not the enemies are bad, it's actually fun to fight them, but they don't shine like the rest of the game.
Pros:
- Nostalgia done right
- Perfect weapon balance
- Excellent level design
- Tons of exploration and secrets
Cons:
- Enemy design could be better
My overall score for this game is a fat 89 out of 100. A feat no game in the last 5 years was able to replicate. Not even doom 2016.
iam so happy there are still game developers creating 90s retro fps games! Hopefully this can become a normal thing, and just the beggining for more fps games to come! Just like dusk, ion fury, amid evil etc!
I never really played the old 90's shooters, and besides Zero Tolerance, I can't say I was ever much a fan. Even Doom, I would watch my cousins play and find some enjoyment, but only a modicum, and as such, I never harbored much nostalgia for those games. And yet here comes Ion Fury, a love letter to these old shooters, and cut from the same cloth, even being built in the same engine used for Duke Nukem 3D.
This is a fast and frantic game; it looks old but with a modern charm and timeless design and aesthetic that it is downright anachronistic. You play as Shelly 'Bombshell' Harrison and your goal is to take out an evil scientist, Heskel. When it comes to story, this is the meat of it, but the gameplay and environment conveys a lot and always keeps Shelly moving.
The level design is usually very good and the combat feels great. It reminded me of Doom 2016 in its pacing near the end, and this is a good thing. With a myriad of weapons (most of which I did end up using in various situations), you mow down a modest, but not too limited, selection of enemies. I really enjoyed the gameplay and the first few levels; the first few hours, really stand out to me.
The music is good and at times very good. I wish it was more prominent. When it is at the forefront it really works. And I also really liked Shelly. Our protagonist is a lady Duke Nukem and she has cheesy one liners and childishly silly observations.
There's a certain sincerity to this game, to how simple and straightforward it is. You move and shoot anything that moves. But the craft that went into this mechanic, to the meeting of these mechanics, is so deft and nuanced that it really becomes something more than it seems. This game stands distinct from the titans of FPS games I have played. It stands out from the Half Lifes and the BioShocks and even the Dooms of gaming. It is a little game but it brings with it the best of the past. My only real complaint is it is a bit long and tended to drag towards the end.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
