HROT is a single-player retro FPS set in a small socialist country neighboring Soviet Union (Czechoslovakia) after an unspecified disaster in 1986. Those times were dark and terrifying and so is the game.
You start in a civil defense shelter deep under a Prague Metro station. As a proud holder of the military readiness badge you know what your duty is: put on a non-functioning gas mask, load the vz. 52 pistol and protect the peace and your socialist homeland from the strange intruders*.
The classic gameplay and vibe of romeric shooters from 1990s including a fitting brown retro aesthetic.
You'll find a shotgun, a vz. 13 SMG, a rocket launcher and even some secret experimental Soviet battery-powered weapons (e.g. a ball lightning launcher). If you run out of ammo, you might find the hammer and sickle coming in handy.
Handcrafted levels inspired by real locations with an emphasis on historical details. Every level contains socialist paraphernalia which nowadays can only be found in museums or your grandma's attic (Eastern Bloc only).
Flushable toilets and destructible light bulbs.
A custom engine written in Pascal imitating 1990s software-style rendering with unfiltered textures and polygon jitter.

I mean that pretty much sums it up. If you like one, you'll like the other.
It's got great movement, fun gibs, absurd levels and bosses, mountains of secrets, great atmosphere and music, etc.
The ONLY complaint I have is that the gun feedback/effects are a bit weak. It makes the SMG feel like a peashooter. But it's a minor complaint.
You should get HROT. Absolutely, 100%.
This game doesn't have any 'dressings' like a Dusk, Amid Evil, Turbo Overkill or other FPS throwbacks. By dressings I mean buff items (i.e. Quad Damage), 'soul' collection for special attacks, upgrades or any of those things. If you can go without those things, give this game five stars.
What you're getting is a shooter with near-perfect movement and level design. Levels aren't overlong and puzzles don't overstay their welcome. Enemies are exactly in the right places. Bosses are sometimes telegraphed but they still can make you shit your pants if you're not paying attention. Some levels throw curveballs at you and you need to work without your trusted gear, but it never feels unfair or gratuitious. What this game does well it does very well.
Finally, this is the funniest game I've played in years. I love lampooning of the USSR and if you appreciate it too, you'll be tongue-in-cheeked amused throughout the game or even laugh your ass off. The dark color pallette and ambient nightmare music makes it funny and creepy at the right intervals. The final boss is a bit on the nose but even that's worth a chuckle.
The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is, like I said at the beginning, it doesn't have that extra 'oomph factor' a lot of these FPS throwbacks have these days. If that doesn't bother you (and it didn't bother me), give it 5 stars and enjoy this awesome game. Na zdravi!
Perfect in every way. Constantly manages to throw in new surprises and you'll definitely want to go back and find all the secrets for multiple playthroughs. Not as short as I was lead to believe - and that's a good thing. LOVE IT
This was my first "retro boomer shooter" that I liked. I couldn't get into Boltgun, but this game was amazing. Combat and movement feel great, you can feel the impact of the guns (although SMG is lacking in that department). This game also has great atmosphere, especially if you are interested in communist block history or like those kind of vibes. Locations in the game are actually based on real Czechoslovakian buildings etc. 10/10 game for me, can't wait for another game from this studio.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
