HROT is a single-player retro FPS set in a small socialist country neighboring Soviet Union (Czechoslovakia) after an unspecified disaster in 1986. Those times were dark and terrifying and so is the game.
You start in a civil defense shelter deep under a Prague Metro station. As a proud holder of the military readiness badge you know what your duty is: put on a non-functioning gas mask, load the vz. 52 pistol and protect the peace and your socialist homeland from the strange intruders*.
The classic gameplay and vibe of romeric shooters from 1990s including a fitting brown retro aesthetic.
You'll find a shotgun, a vz. 13 SMG, a rocket launcher and even some secret experimental Soviet battery-powered weapons (e.g. a ball lightning launcher). If you run out of ammo, you might find the hammer and sickle coming in handy.
Handcrafted levels inspired by real locations with an emphasis on historical details. Every level contains socialist paraphernalia which nowadays can only be found in museums or your grandma's attic (Eastern Bloc only).
Flushable toilets and destructible light bulbs.
A custom engine written in Pascal imitating 1990s software-style rendering with unfiltered textures and polygon jitter.

Got this on Steam when it was just a few maps. Must say its a real nod to the original Quake with lots of shades of brown and some extra game play features. Whats more amasing is this is the work of one guy! Great job.
A retro journey to a dark and gloomy past. A hunting soundtrack, detailed sound design, intricate level design with a lot to explore, hilarious enemies, smart secret locations. Did i mention the soundtrack? It's excellent.
I didn't grew up with Quake and Doom like games, and after i saw the reviews for this one, i took a chance and i am having a blast with it. So much fun i bought Quake1,2 and Doom 1,2. This is a testament to a design choice that started all.
I have had this on another storefront for a while, and I am so happy to see HROT come to GOG. A lot of games have claimed the title "retro shooter," but HROT really delivers. The gameplay is solid, the world aesthetic is cool, and it rewards exploration with secrets much like DOOM, Quake, and other classics. For me it stands alongside DUSK as modern games which truly understand the genre and the era.
I've been burned with other early access projects, but HROT has continutally delivered, and been responsive to input. With the second act done I can't wait for the final game, but I'm sure third act development will be fun and exciting, too.
If you love classic FPS you owe yourself this experience.
The gameplay elements scratched an itch that's been lying dormant since the 90s. The weapons were fun and enjoyable to use and the gameplay on higher difficulties was tense and gritty. The soviet atmosphere and monotone color pallette added to the atmosphere of the game more than I had expected. I have never before blown up Gorbachev's disembodied head and cleaned it up with a bucket and a mop before. This game shines in glory for all men to see.
HROT is a truly bizarre game, clearly heavily inspired by both Quake and Dusk, it's both of them and yet neither, as in many regards it's more akin to Duke 3D in the way it attempts to portray a realistic world. The game engine, a home developed one, like that of Dusk, is visually very close to Quake 1 or software Quake 2. The theme, a psychological horror like Amnesia or Dusk, combined with the visuals which lean hard into soviet era hungarian aesthetic results in a truly unique game - body horror and disturbing themes combine to create something that is hard to explain, but very playable. The body horror in particular is everpresent - vomiting guards, horses in gas masks, wheelchair bound foes who spit bullets, a gymn pommel horse with a rocket launcher, the game ramps up the wierdness to the point that nothing seems out of the ordinary. The concept, if considered long enough, is a meme and critique heavy perspective of a hungarian considering the insanity of their own lives in the context of video games, though HROT doesn't ask you to consider this any more than it asks you to simply exist in the world it portrays. Perhaps the best way to recommend HROT is 'Quake but at the end of each episode you get a recipe' or 'KingPin's visuals with Duke 3D's realism, and Stalker's world' but these imply that the game is far more derivative than it really is - HROT is simply HROT, a truly unique and special shooter, developed by someone in awe of Dusk, but with a much tighter understanding of what made Quake work. Where Dusk is all about subverting expectations and pushing you to a challenge limit, HROT is about cleverly balanced combat encounters. It matters not, HROT is simply put a wonderful game, well balanced, well paced and incredibly put together. At about 2 hours per episode. it's not too long, but it's witty, very european, and highly engaging, even if 50% of it appears to be sewer levels!
