Gentle casual aesthetic and gameplay, but with some good depth to the mechanics. Enjoyed my time with it so far, experienced no crashes or isses.
Currently quite brief content-wise. There's maybe 5 hours to complete the game if you ace the mechanics perfectly - 90% of the current game is easy to complete with little focus, then major min/maxing required to finish off the final level.
You need to purposefully create a 'Save' in game, or it won't 'Save on exit' as you'd expect and you'll lose progress, though at this point that's not overly important.
I had great hopes for this game, especially with just the beginning and creating your own group, but that's where the happiness ends.
I won't state what others have already stated that make this game a disappointment beyond saying that even when you have everything lined up to your advantage with stats and the like, you can still get your butt handed to you readily. And you have no control over how the fights play out.
I've gone back a few times to give the game another chance thinking it's just a case of "git gud", but it plays out the same way every time by the second island and ends in frustration.
Great idea/concept, but a let down all around.
Godhood is a relaxing turn based game. You can finish a game in 5 to 8 hours and than play another religion. I gave it 3 stars because it starts to get repetitive in the end. Would play it again after a time, so it isn't like a Civ or Stellaris game (for me) that I could start another playthrough soon the last was finished. Buy it when it has a discount.
This game first came to being with a great vision and mediocre gameplay. That said, it was a looooong journey and it got better with each update. The devs are actively listening to the community (join the Abbey Games Discord if you are interested) and I am happy to say that the game (with the last update #6: tenets and traditions) is finally fun to play and toy around with.
To all other people with ratings here and all people who consider buying it: please look at the newest update and recent gameplay again! There were a lot of changes recently and I'm very fond of them.
To the game itself:
You begin the game with a single follower with a vision of you as a god who is determined to spread the word. You'll then develop your religion with minor (tenets) and major (traditions) flavor upgrades with special buffs and actions they unlock. You can be a god of Knowledge and Reason, a god of wrath and blood or a god of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll (almost).
The game progresses in stages of sacraments (fights), where your disciples meet another city's strongest disciples and try to convert them by one of various means. Depending on what type of god you are, your disciples can politely discuss the benefits of faith in you, seduce enemy disciples, make the mad with visions of your monstrous being or simply bash in the head of everyone who doubts that you are the strongest of gods and your followers are the strongest of men.
Aside from the main progress (there is a kind of story, too, which will be fleshed out more before launch), some events can happe in your city depending on your choices and of course you always have to look after your disciples and keep them happy and faithful (e.g. if you buff just a single disciple too much, he may wonder why he should worship a god if he himself is a god among humans and lose faith in you). It's not too deep but the number of choices you can make is constantly growing and it's all pretty fun and nice to look at.
Been following the game since pre-release, and it looked much better in the beta builds.
Devs went bankrupt during launch, laid off all employees, and basically gave up development to the community on Discord.
The launch build is an unpolished mess, with terrible balance bandaids and very questionable community additions.
Even the battle screen UI looks better in beta, final version is just a blue bar.
It's a pity. There's an incomplete game hiding in there, and the basic assets and character archetypes are solid.
It just isn't well finished, and the small team of devs left kinda ran it into the ground at launch phase.
Not worth the price, but COULD BE if they made some competent updates (and stopped listening to a few players in their discord community with very niche demands).
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
