Opis
Before man climbed down from the trees to shop in megastores and drink cappuccino, before the Earth wadded itself into a cool blue ball, before the Moon even existed, there was the Island. The Island, a massive fragment of a long-lost planet, hurtling blindly through space. Upon the surface of this paradise wanders the giant, Kabuto. Little does Kabuto know that the Island was home to others before him. In the oceans, there dwells a matriarchal race called the Sea Reapers. In their pride, they created Kabuto, as a defense against intruders. But Kabuto became conscious of himself, his loneliness, his pain - and he went berserk.

Space castaways, the Meccs piloted their ship through space, looking for their missing friends. If you haven’t guessed already, they ended up on the Island. Faced with yet another unscheduled layover while on their way to Planet Majorca, the Meccs decide to make the best of their temporary home. Just their luck - the natives are already embroiled in their own little war, and the Mecc visitors are most unwelcome!

Meccaryns... Sea Reapers... Kabuto... One island isn’t big enough for the three of them.
  • Three unique races, each with a totally different gameplay experience
  • Bawdy humor that will keep you laughing throughout the game
  • One of the most original games ever created

Unique, entertaining action shooter worth a weekend of fun

Full Disclosure: I am okay at FPS/action video games, but not stellar. I'm generally easy to please so long as a game isn't annoyingly repetitive, cryptic, or punishing. I had never heard of this game before it went on sale here, I bought it because of all the glowing reviews. Many of them seem to be written by folk who played this when it first came out re-purchasing it for nostalgia, so I thought I'd add my two cents from the perspective of someone just now trying it for the first time. I didn't touch multiplayer, but I understand there is a small community of folk who still play online. Like many older games' multiplayer modes, I imagine your best bet is to get a group of buddies together and play with folk you know. Other reviewers have already done an excellent job of summarizing the basic story and mechanics, so I won't cloud the water with my own rendition of that material. The Good: Story - A bit shallow by storytelling standards, but for an action game it isn't bad at all. The characters are fleshed out nicely and the cutscenes are genuinely funny. Bonus points for creating unique races & settings, liberal use of Cockney accents, and an instruction manual that has fun explaining the world and its inhabitants. Sound - Some sound effects can get repetitive, but on the whole the sounds work fine, the music does its job nicely, and I didn't encounter any significant sound glitches. The Acceptable: Graphics - Nothing fancy by today's standards (with all effects on, they're around old-school World of Warcraft's level of detail), but perfectly fine if you're used to playing older games. Controls - If you aren't familiar with PC-based FPS controls you're going to have a tough time, otherwise it's easy enough to adapt to each race after playing a couple of missions. The controls more or less work well, but can feel a bit unresponsive on Delphi and Kabuto. Gyrocopter and Reaperski (i.e., vehicle) controls suck, but are usable. I had no end of trouble with the Reaperski race missions, but only had to cheat past the last one. On Windows 7, run this in XP Compatibility Mode or else some controls might not work right (Mecc group commanding in my case). Difficulty - The overall difficulty curve is a bit wobbly, but mostly progresses in a linear fashion. Once I got the hang of a combat strategy for each race (I went with mobility & long-range attacks for Meccs, hit & run for Delphi, smash & grab for Kabuto), most missions were easy/medium difficutly for me. The base building takes time to get used to, but isn't bad once you learn a good build order and how to pace base defense with acquiring resources. At least one mission per race seemed unnecessarily difficult and took me multiple tries to complete, but other than the final Reaperski race I was eventually able to beat all of them. Thinking outside the box definitely helps when confronting numerous or powerful foes. The Bad: Instructions - Even with the fun-to-read manual, several aspects of the game are not well documented. The instruction manual doesn't summarize or provide a "Quick Controls" list, and leaves out some potentially useful information (e.g., how to control minions, how to get off of a vehicle, etc.). That said, if you're okay with learning as you go and a bit of trial & error, you should be fine. No Checkpoints - The game uses mission-based progression, but there is no quick save or checkpoint feature while in a mission. For the base-building missions, having to restart doesn't reset your base, but for other types of missions be prepared to lose up to an hour of work if you fail right before the end. Summary: I'm glad I bought and played this game. It was annoying and frustrating at times, but overall it's a good open-world action shooter that's different enough to be interesting and made by folks with a sense of humor. I agree with the nostalgia reviewers that Giants: Citizen Kabuto's entertaining twists on action shooter gameplay make it worth the purchase. If you're okay with slogging through a few annoying missions (or don't mind cheating past them) and can look past minor control issues and slightly dated graphics, this is a fun way to spend a weekend or two.

Unusual game

This game looks fantastic, when you look at it first time. And blows your head off with all that amazing graphics, tech things and so on. There are plenty of action in this game, but as i said this game is unusual. Missions are stupid but very fun. Game with label - "Must Have". My rating 5/5

Decent game but a bit aged(Hard review!)

NOTE: I'm an hard reviewer. I only review the game after I finish it at least once, and give 3 stars to a 'good' game but that I wouldn't play again. 5 stars is absolutely epic. Why? Because there are too many games to "lose" your time but only a pack of them does really worth your time. CGK is a decent action/humor game for its time. I have very good moments with it, specially early. In the lasts stages it becomes very repetitive. The history is pretty simple and easy to follow and the controls are ok. It only supports automatic saving, but it wasn't a problem for me. I had a lot of technical problems (graphics + mouse sensibitily problems) until I installed the unofficial patch 1.5, and still I had few bugs, but I least I could play it. The most annoying is, in Windows 8.1, once you go in, you cannot control the game at all. You need to Ctrl+Alt+Del, then Esc, and then clicking fast on the CGK program, in the Window's task bar. Again, while fun, I wouldn't play this game unless I were really bored, and just in the case I wouldn't completed it.

Giant Ambition

We tend to throw the word “underrated” around a lot, but it's rarely been more true than for this game. Allowing you to play as three different species, each with their own gameplay, Giants is ambitious, sometimes even masterful, and most people ignore its existence. The atmosphere is unique and great. The game, very cartoonish in tone, is full of quirky characters and humor (sometimes surprisingly dark and mature), and most cutscenes got a chuckle from me. In contrast to that, its musical score and art direction are quite melancholic, and often beautiful in their own right. The game uses an impressive graphical technology, which shows its age but allows for huge environments, good lighting effects, and detailed character models with superb animations. For a game based off so many different gameplay types, which is usually a sign that none of them are good, they all work surprisingly well. None of the weapons are hitscanning and the shooting can get a bit janky, but all things considered, the controls, while complex, feel really sleek 95% of the time, the movements are enjoyable and the attacks feel powerful. Right now, I make the game seem like a masterpiece, but is it flawless? Eeeh, nope. First, the RTS parts of the game can feel a bit lackluster, since some of the features of your base are never used in the campaign, saved for the multiplayer component. My main problem is the often frustrating difficulty (unadjustable, btw). The enemies are many, accurate, hit hard, die slowly, and ammo depletes quickly. You often end up trying to snipe enemy units from the safest distance, constantly backtracking to resupply. You also have to finish levels in one setting without dying, since there's no manual save option. Fortunately, the most difficult levels take place in the first half of the game, and for the most part, Giants: does a good job of keeping you interested, constantly throwing new things at you, and you'll never give up on it until the very end.
