You want it darker . . . ?

Frostpunk is a survival citybuilder, combining the mechanics of game "Banished" and the feeling of the movie "Snowpiercer": The world has frozen over and the only hope of survival for your ragtag group of people is "The city". You have to manage your workforce, mine resouces, build structures, keep your people fed and ensure a steady supply of coal at all times to feed the furnace of the heat-giving generator. In addition, the game provides you with the "Book of Laws" to affect certain aspects of your town: Very quickly, you will have to use it to keep your society intact and going, however threadbare it might turn out to be: You may legislate the use of child labour to make up for a lack of workforce, or sign a law to adress the issue of your terminally ill citizens, which can no longer work, but will still consume rations. This mechanic makes the game really shine, in my opinion. While it does not question your decisions at any point by making them "right" or "wrong", it certainly will remind you of the consequences, often painfully so: Take the child labour law, for example: Some ramifications of this law became apparent early on, such as parents being concerned for the children's wellbeing, demanding double rations or the occasional day off, when the first got hurt during workshift. It was not until later in the game when, during a 24 hour emergency shift, a child dropped dead from exhaustion and I was presented with a new choice: Shut down work at the place for the day and take the loss of resources OR keep everybody working for "the good of the city", with losses/gains on hope and discontent respectively ? As a bare-bones citybuilder, the game is a rather simple affair, but then again, that is not it's core mechanic: Depending on how involved in the game you allow yourself to be, the morality mechanic can affect you quite a lot - I was not very proud of myself at several points and it really stung, even after making it to the end (maybe even more so).

This game may question your morality.

This game starts out like a city buiilder/survival game and does a good job at it, you have to managa resources carefully and plan ahead for your people to survive the harsh cold. I love the steampunk style and gritty atmosphere of the game, you can clearly tell it's an 11 bit game. The other way you can tell it's an 11 bit game is through the focus on ethics and morality. If you really go for it your city can be transformed into either a big religious cult or a police state, with you on top wondering if maybe you want a bit too far. At least your disciples, err, citizens aren't hungry or cold yet, right?

OK game ruined by fatal flaws

The game itself is OK, if not somewhat simplistic. It's really a easy game right up until the finale. Then the "coming storm" game mechanic can ruin your ending without warning. It tells you that you have 3 days to rescue some people, then without warning with still a day or so on the clock the site becomes inaccessible due to the storm. If you are going to set objectives and attach time frames to them, be honest about the time frames especially if the player's entire game depends on it. Fatal flaw to the game.

Fine deal, moral issues

I cannot give a bad rating because I spent some memorable hours playing with this. But yeah… So, the game is basically very enjoyable. Especially if you like steampunk and city builders, in that case you will love it. On the game-play side there are only a few flaws, like the tutorial is kind-of not well designed, I had to restart the game a couple times so my people don’t die off in the first 3 day, because I did not know what to do or how to do it. There are some bugs though not really annoying ones. And some mechanics feel a bit forced, like hunting. It is unclear to me what they are hunting. People are freezing and dying inside a heated shelter, what could possibly survive outside? The story is interesting, it presents you with some difficult decisions, which also happens to be its undoing because after a while it becomes rather depressing. I could not force myself to go on after the second scenario. And I do not like the “development cycle” either. The “let’s divide the game into many parts, sell each for a half-game price, and get loaded” philosophy. I really miss the old days when devs were releasing one game for the price of one game. I am not saying you should not buy it; I did. But I really do not feel good about supporting this type of game development.

Addicting! and so challenging!!!

I never thought of it much when i saw it on steam. thanks too xbox game pass I have never felt such strong emotions of fear, depression, morrally caring, and guilty. You feel responsible. Just that opening cutscene with the music is so powerfull. Especially when you get to the end all you can think and feel is "HURRY!!! HURRY!!! HURRY!!! WE NEED TO SRUVIVE!" because the game is really....really. challenging, and if you love challenges. Do give this game a shot. You can easily make the wrong decision in the very start of the game and you'll choose to restart for so many will quickly fall ill, starve, rapidly increase discontent while equally loosing hope, with the constant church bell of deaths, lastly the game is about morals do you think children should help become light workers to eventually passing a law to work heavy jobs, or build a child care building that can lead to aiding medical facilities or engineers for boosting research. Should we build a cemetary or snow pit for dead bodies? If one falls gravely should we use radical treament or just sustain them just to become a burden. Should we make alternative food (saw dust) we can fill so much more but they will more likely fall ill or soup to produce so much but they will constantly grow discontent and eventually rebel. Twords the end you have to choose for your city to believe in either religion or authority. If you're going to buy this game just buy the game of the year edition. Looking through the reviews here i just want to pull my hair out to anyone that gives this game 3 stars or less. It's a magnificent game an a experience you can't find much anywhere else.
