The Forgotten Realms Archives - Collection Three marks the conclusion of the Archives compilation and a change in development from Strategic Simulations Inc. to Dreamforge Intertainment. Hours of replayability with Dungeon Hack’s randomly generated dungeons
This is pretty poor - the graphics glitched (at least I think it was a glitch) and I could barely see anything as the drow blended into the backgroud apart from their blond hair - as I was pursued through the burning town by disembodied flowing blond locks, I decided that this was a trip to nostalgia lane that should never have been taken.
Hi,
I know that there are a lot of positive reviews about Dungeon Hack but please listen to these points as well:
(I will not repeat the positive things, since many review already mentioned them.)
1. there is only one caracter in Dungeon Hack. It is definitely a disadvantage compared to the great classics like EOB. But there is also a big problem with this. If you create a e.g. cleric you will find items for clerics. So you will feel that the plenty of maces and staves have been put there by somebody just for you. It can riun the spirit, the feeling. It is not realistic that there is a boss, waiting only for your caracter. Why could not find my cleric any e.g swords? How did the creators of the dungeon know that a cleric and not a fighter will come to defeat them?
2. All of the levels are very schematic, there are no reason at all why this or that room or hall is there. In EOB the maps were designed. Here they are just generated. E.g. you will know that there is an illusionary wall just because something is missing from tha map and all of the levels have a rectangle shape so there most be a room. How dull.
3. But who is this guy who built this dungeon? A big evil? No -it is you. This is the main point of the game. In a certain meaning it could be an advantage, since you can customize it as you wish, but where is the surprise in it? If you know for sure that there will not be undeads, pits, water,... where is the excitement, the curiosity?
4. So the questions are: who changed all of the e.g. swords for maces directly for my cleric? Who created this dungeon? Yes, you. So who I defeate at the end? Yes, yourself. Not exciting.
To summarize: very poor levels since they are not designed like in e. g. EOB but just generated, and there is no story at all (in EOB you could meet a tribe of dwarves who has reason to be there, NPCs with a backgroud story (even with simple story but at least something) could join your team, but in this game you just create a dungeon what you know more than the boss in it and then defeate youself. Poor. I think it could be good for those people for who the big classic ones of the genre were too difficult so they can switch of those elements and be proud of themselves. (If you vote down this review claiming that it is not useful I will know that you are in this category :-) )
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
