Did you ever want to reroute power to the shields, set phasers to stun,
or even eject the warp core? Well, now you can! In FTL, you experience the
atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a
dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with
multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down
your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape,
power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the
fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation
roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure
through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.
FTL's complex strategic gameplay allows you to give orders to your crew,
manage ship power distribution, and choose weapon targets in the heat of
battle. You will encounter unique alien lifeforms and technology. You can
upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien
races. Be the Captain you want: hundreds of text based encounters will
force you to make tough decisions. In the randomized galaxy each
play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your
decisions. Each time you play another challenging session of FTL:Faster Than Light, it won't be quite the same.

Quick play sessions (from 5 to about 90 minutes) will allow you to add that spaceship commander feeling to any of your days.
This game is like playing poker against the best poker players in the world with couple of cheaters mixed in. At the beginning it looks like a game of (bad) luck with overpowered opponent, but after several failures, you start to learn from your mistakes. The game never becomes easy (not even on easy difficulty), but winning becomes more and more possible after each failure.
If you like rogue-like-esque games than you will love FTL. If you love Space Combat and pretending that you are the commanding officer of a ship in the middle of a firefight, you will love this game. If you like playing games, you will love this game.
Such a simple design yet so effective, this game made dying fun. Knowing that I would have to go through the same stuff was never tedious for me. Mix in a few moral choices and this is one of my favorite games!
Although I can't express my sadness when Lovell (My former weapons officer) was killed in a Mantis raid on my ship, Talon of Idris. I was in mourning for more than an hour for that guy. I may be a little strange, but I form an emotional attachment with my crew members so much that losing one really feels like it puts me at a large disadvantage.
The random stores wouldn't be so bad but the random contents of the stores hurts the strategy and forces the game into luck of the draw at times. Because of this the game is hard on easy, specially when it comes to the final battle. All the same, the game is addictive and a lot of fun.
I did not like this game. If I was asked by someone if he should buy it, I would tell him "No". It's over-hyped.
The difficulty is intense, even on "Easy" mode. The gameplay is interesting in the beginning but becomes extremely boring after 1 hour at most. The progression as well as the difficulty should be made easier.
Events happening in the game are completely random, so if you are unlucky then you will lose badly. There is more random factor involved in playing and winning than strategy.
Waste of money.
I'm reviewing the Advanced edition.
As other reviewers have mentioned, a bad event can ruin a long game, without you being able to do anything against it. There's no strategy involved.
A successful run mostly depends on getting the right weapon setup: and most weapons are crap, you have to find out which are the good ones. But it's purely a question of luck, if you can find these weapons or not: not all shops have weapons, and even less have good weapons.
This almost works in the 'normal' edition, but with the extra content of the 'advanced' edition (that is optional at least) I found the game basically unplayable.
Add to this that this is essentially an RTS, but without a speed slider, so that if battles are easy you have to stay there for minutes just watching, to see maybe everything ruined in 10 seconds after one jump in space.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
