The Prologue of Fantasy General II - Invasion is available on GOG.com for FREE. You can see it here.

Three hundred years have passed since the Shadow Wars have ravaged Keldonia and the world of Aer, and the struggles of the past have long since faded into legends.

In the Highlands of Fareach, Clans of Barbarian warriors have eked out a living in the harsh northern climate, constantly feuding with each other and raiding the wealthier Borderland towns. Fed up with these constant attacks, the Borderland Clans called on the Empire for help – a powerful realm controlling the land from the Scarlett Mountains to Cynehelm Valley and the Hoarwood. The Western Imperial Legion was sent to face the highland raiders, and with the help of the Borderland clans Iseal and Machnar, killed High King Brendan in the battle of Wyrm’s Pass.

A treaty was signed that forbade any clan from crossing into the Borderlands in return for peace. Since then, there has been no High King to unite the Clans, and they fell into quarrelling and raiding amongst themselves.

In these dark times your clan has been led by Falir One-Eye, a warrior of great renown. You are his son and designated heir, and you are eager to prove your mettle to the Clan Council and your father…

  • The Legacy
Fantasy General II is the reimagination of the strategy game classic from the 90s!
Armies once again draw battle-lines on the war-torn land of Keldonia, and a new generation of commanders will test their bravery and tactics against each other. Fantasy wargaming is back!

  • The Battles
True to the tradition of the original game, Fantasy General II is all about turn-based battles. Lead over 75 different unique unit types, including powerful heroes.
Take into consideration terrain, weapons and armour, magical effects, morale, and the balance of forces, make a plan, execute it, and vanquish your enemy, forging your reputation as a savage war-leader.

  • The Campaign
Battle after battle, you will need to make decisions and develop your army. The young clan members will need to be trained, and as they gain enough experience, even the greenest recruits can be turned into champions. But beware: costly victories can be worse than a defeat… when battle-hardened units perish, so does their progression and experience.
Each unit comes with their specific abilities, arms and armour, and they can be equipped with magic artefacts you find during battle and upgraded with gold and resources that you need to plunder from your enemy.

  • The Clans
A confederation of autonomous hill-land tribes, who value their independence and will fight fiercely for it.
Field axemen, berserkers, spearmaidens, trolls and shamans, summon ancestor spirits and mighty elementals or train nimble stag riders and deadly werebears or recruit mercenaries from longbowmen to centaurs.

  • The Empire
The most powerful realm on the face of Aer.
Face the mighty Legions of the Empire and their magical creations from dragon cannons to golems as well as the Undead hordes they bring to battle, or fight harpies, lizard people and great dragons on your way.

  • The World
The world of Aer is filled with beauty and wonders. From the cold, magic-rich highlands of Fareach, home to the player’s Barbarian Clans, to the Borderlands with their fertile river valleys and deep woods where witches and monsters still roam free; from the Sunken Land, submerged through a great Cataclysm and filled with treacherous swamp and Lizardfolk, to the refined and temperate Empire to the South, home to wondrous cities and built upon undead labour. Your campaign will see you fight across very different battlefields, requiring variable tactics and army composition.

Solid core, fatal omissions

First of all, let me tell you that in case of Fantasy General II, I like what I see. The core seems solid - the phase-based combat system, the tactical opportunities provided by terrain and unit placement, the upgrade paths, the updated graphics, it all seems very promising. However, there are some quite glaring omissions one cannot overlook when starting playing. The first is the absolute lack of flavor texts for units. That is a HUGE missed opportunity in my opinion, since the game has no intro animation to speak of, the manual does not tell you anything about the lore and the world the game takes place in. Who are you (besides being a generic viking-ish tribe/clan?) What is the way of living of your people, what are their believes? Are they craftsmen, nomads, farmers, or ruthless pillagers and slavers? Who are their friends, and who are their enemies? The whole fantastic lore of Dark Souls is told mostly via item descriptions. Here, you are not told anything, yet the game asks you to make lore-based decisions (who to support, etc.) I have been told by the devs that there are flavor texts for units, but they are in an artbook, but you must pay extra for it. Considering the already steep price of the standard edition, that's disappointin. Speaking of content, the game feels very thin on that front. There is only one campaign featuring a single nation (FG 1 had four heroes, if I remember correctly, each fighting for different side). Other similarly priced games provide animated intros, multiple campains, encyclopedia, etc. That said, despite all my complains, the game feels good, challenging, I feel compelled to play, if only the missing parts were sufficiently fleshed out so that the buyer would have a feeling he got adequate value for his money (which is currently definitely not the case). Cutting content for standard edition buyers in an already content-light game was IMO not a smart decision.

Feels bit short living game

At first game seems good, but then it starts to feel like it lacks depth. Also game communicates things that are happening poorly, which some times causes you wonder if thing a bug or was it meant to happen. Game has good mechanical base for great strategy game but currently it feels that it does not have enough meat to held interest for longer period of time.

Good game, bad release. Overpriced.

First off I want to say I'm not a fantasy general veteran, in fact I can't even remember playing the original game. So I went into it pretty blind. So my review is based on that. I bought the game because I watched a bit of lets plays and thought it looked interesting and the reviews both here and on Steam were amazingly high, so I took a shot at it and normally for me with any sort of strategy game my first activity is to go to the skirmish and multiplayer modes (if applicable) to see what is on offer. Right there was the major let down. The way they sold the skirmish mode quite honestly underdelivers massively. Which makes me think that the primary feature of the game is the campaign and it is primarily pitched at fans of the original and not really anyone else. While I haven't touched the campaign yet the skirmish is very shallow and not even remotely worth anywhere near what the asking price is. The campaign might be good but paying $57 AUD for just a campaign of a not-particularly deep game is not at all worth it. Moreover on the Steam forums the devs mentioned that there was play by email support, which might exist but all of the multiplayer is locked behind "online-only" DRM. Which is my final gripe. I buy games on GOG to avoid DRM, even with multiplayer (Remember offline LANS? I do) and an increasing number of their releases are relying on online services to facilitate multiplayer. For this game you have to login to "GOG" service (Which can't be done offline) or Slitherine which is a straight login. Despite the fact that a game like this would normally have a hotseat mode or could implement play by email in a way that does not require a login. For now I'd say hold off on purchasing this and/or wait until it's heavily discounted.

Seems great so far

I'm a big fan of the original and though I'm only a few scenarios in I felt like dropping a review. The interface and performance are vastly improved over the original, also it seems a lot more beginner friendly than the original which was balls hard. Music, graphics and gameplay seem really nice. If you are on the fence about this one give it a shot!

Best turn-based fantasy tactics in years

This game still has me hooked after almost 100 hours. Solid gameplay, interesting story and mostly-okay UI. The different units are good and weak at the things you would expect from their descriptions and stats, and it's a fun puzzle to figure out how to best break a cluster of enemies with the right sequence of attacks. The upgrade trees are also fun to explore, and it's good that you can spend surplus resources on training existing troops to give them new buffs. Oh yeah, and scouting really matters. My niggles: - The map should really be able to zoom out more and not lag so much. The graphics are so relatively simple that it really shouldn't be be an issue on a modern PC. - You can't set units as done for the round, so it becomes a hassle to find the units that still have moves when moving a large army. - It's bloody annoying finding and assigning items to units. - On the minimap, it's impossible to tell used from fresh units, and the same for explored and unexplored locations.
