Highly Underrated

Fallout Tactics is an incredible game that focusses on tactical combat set in the Fallout Universe. The engine used in this game is incredibly beautiful with a depth of combat that is unmatched by many games in the genre (except for Jagged Alliance 2). The atmosphere of the game is brilliant and captures both the Fallout "vibe" as well as the feeling of being part of the Brotherhood of Steel perfectly. The progression systems, combat options, tactical encounters and usage of the SPECIAL system are well-created. The only major drawback of Fallout Tactics is that RPG mechanics take a backseat and the C of SPECIAL (i.e. Charisma) for example is seldom used, but at the same time there are actual story choices that have a large impact on the outcome of the game. Just don't expect to talk your way out of encounters. Overall, Fallout Tactics is a very underrated game (compared to the first two) and absolutely deserves your attention if you love the first two games. It is a true Tactics game brilliantly adapted for the Fallout Universe and using 90% of everything that makes Fallout unique.

Great tactic game + Fallout universe

I remember that near release date many die-hard fans of Fallout 1 & 2 were complaining, that Tactics is "no Fallout, it's some bootleg and mockery" (despite the fact, that it was from the very beginning considered as spin-off, not the next cRPG). Fortunately, years have passed and the game received the good reception even amongst most hardcore Fallout-fanbase. And totally deserved. It has everything you need in good tactic game - big variety of weapons and gear (many of them directly taken from original Fallout 1 and 2, sometimes slightly redesigned), decent customization of your squad, maps which are rewarding wise and careful approach and of course merciless enemies (although AI is sometimes not especially clever). Although I've got to admit, that during the campaign you're a bit limited with creating your team - you will have available ghouls, mutants and even death claws a bit later, but at this point you will probably stick to your team due to the fact that you've trained them in the way you prefer (not to mention about lack of limits in using weapons and gear). It's a cool feature to have those non-human beings under your control, but I'm guessing that it's a bit more useful in multiplayer mode. I was really sceptical about this real-time mode, but surprisingly - I've spent most of the time in this mode during whole campaign. It's functional, dynamic but still requires some tactical approach (and sometimes I've switched it to turn-based mode, especially in more complex battles). In case of mechanics I regret a bit that some of the skills are rarely useful (especially those which were taken directly from Fallout 1-2, like science, but their "presence" in Tactics is rather symbolical), and that interaction with other characters is nothing more than listening what they have to say (I know, it's a tactical game, but still it would be nice to say anything). I was really satisfied when I've finished campaign (quite long) and I highly recommend Fallout Tactics.

A pleasant surprise

After playing through the isometric Fallouts for the first time in 2020, I must shyly admit this could be my favorite. While I enjoyed the world and story of FO1, and was impressed by the huge scale and complexity of FO2, there always were some gameplay or technical quirks that annoyed me. For FT, I had no expectations whatsoever, but I decided to give it a try as well, and I don't regret it. It is for Fallout sort of what Icewind Dale is for Baldur's Gate (only with even less role-playing), which for me isn't a bad thing at all. The RPG aspect in FT is shrunk to a minimum and pretty much limited to character development (which works identically as in the previous games). Only here, we can develop up to six characters, which is one of the best things about it. Firstly, as they're fully controllable, there's no dealing with an idiotic AI like in FO1/2, which finally makes the combat actually enjoyable. Secondly, our main character doesn't need to be a jack of all trades, since important skills can be distributed among the whole squad. The combat system is similar and different from before at the same time. The difference makes a possibility to switch between real-time and turn-based mode instantly at any time, which makes the game faster and more dynamic, but still provides a chance to slow down when things get too hot. Mission design is above average, I'd say, with varied goals and basically no typically frustrating moments, such as time-limited objectives, infinite enemy spawns, or defending NPCs. Maps are really quite big, and missions are long with plenty of fighting, which might get tedious at times. Designers did what they could to make maps as diverse as the Fallout universe allows. Besides typical wastelands and settlements, there are underground labs and caves, futuristic structures, and even snowy landscapes. There's a lot of weapons and equipment to use, mostly taken from FO2 but with a few additions, as well as usable vehicles. For a tactical game, it would be neat to have destructible environments, and if our troops' mobility weren't so limited to predefined paths, but it's still enjoyable enough.

Good for the 2/3 of the game

I would give 4 stars but the replayability is really low. Some maps are really cool, multiple objective where you can take different routes, but most of the maps forces you to follow a single route with enemies placed in. Forget the melee/unarmed build, probably it's viable for the first part of the game, but then you are usually outnumbered and outgunned. It runs perfectly in windows 10.

Brotherhood of Steel

Many forget to mention that this Fallout game is more about BOS - The Brotherhood of Steel. It’s not like Fallout 1 or 2 (which i played, but so long ago, i don’t t even remember). Of course it’s linear, because you are a member of BOS and you follow orders. Looking for technology in very dangerous wasteland. Dealing with raiders, beasts, beast masters, deadclaws, supermutants, brahmin, the wasteland and post apocalyptic world will overwhelm you. Remember, good perception is best for this game. You can shoot and hit from longer distances. You need to focus group members for their role, when you build them bad, it can get ugly. Have 2-3 shooters, doctor, stealth and steal is good too, lockpicker, grenadier, heavy gunner, barter, traps to disarm traps… the SPECIAL system is so far the best I’ve ever seen in game. After so many years, i still have this game, in any new computer I get, I always install Fallout BOS. I would really like to see a graphical remake of this awesome underrated game.
