Worth at least one playthrough

I don't regret buying this game, particularly because it was on sale, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. I really enjoyed the first portion of the game, especially because of the retro atmospheres, and I wish the graphical upgrades were paced more gradually. Overall the game just has an "ok" or "meh" feeling. One thing I will elaborate on, though, is when the game makes the jump to full 3D graphics, combat feels like it came from a very amateur freeware game and is cumbersome. I wouldn't avoid this game altogether, but I wouldn't set my expectations very high either.

A neat homage to JRPGs

Evoland is Shiro Games' love letter to the RPGs they grew up with, but not a whole lot else. It's simply a guided tour of classic JRPG tropes and graphical styles, and while it's charming and cute, it's not a good game. If you love JRPGs and can get it on sale for a buck or two it's worth looking at, but otherwise you shouldn't bother.

Cool concept, inadequate in execution

As gamers who know and love the medium and the cultures we partake in, we must set standards for ourselves. This does not meet those standards. I am deeply disappointed with this. Evoland is not fun. Evoland is not cool. I don't want games like Evoland - they are, sadly, a waste of resources and time.

Good Idea, Poor Execution

Perhaps I am bias, but I never enjoy any game that has the word 'evolution' or anything remotely similar in the title. This game has a decent concept, but a poor execution.

Decent...

This game is largely nostalgia fodder for the poor little kid inside of you that still cries out for video games as they once were. However, they are not, and this isn't either. It pays homage to some of the greats, and throws in a bunch of quirky humor, but not worth the $9.99 price tag. I picked it up during a sale and said why not? If it had been more pricy, I might have found out why not... However, it is what it is, play it, get a few short laughs, but if you are not a die hard Final Fantasy and Zelda fan, you might want to turn back now, lest ye fall prey to boredom and a lack of joke enjoyment.
