Dungeon Keeper Gold™

This game is a great dungeon building/evil overlord simulator....the only problem is that this is the DOS version which is the worst version - the better one is the windows 95 version which sadly is not this one This version is low-res, highly pixelated that run in a 320x240 - and yes I know that you can improve texture quality by pressing Alt+R but it will only change the in-game to Hi-res and will leave the main menu, overworld map and the cutscences still to be in low-res... So my advice if you already own the game - install keeperFX mod....Still it would have been nice if the 95 ver would be made compatible with newer systems and would be released in addition to the DOS one

I was so excited to finally get to play this - when it originally came out my PC wasn't anyway near powerful enough to run it. So, over twenty years on, I finally get the chance. However, as soon as I get into the game, I am hit with a major issue that makes the game unplayable for me: The speed is much too fast now. I'm not sure of the correct terminology but the processor speed affects the speed of the game. As a result, just moving my mouse a millimeter sends the cursor flying off in that direction. I have reduced in-game sensitivity, Windows mouse sensitivity and my own mouse sensitivity to the very lowest and it has hardly made any difference at all, the cursor is still faster than the speed of light :( Regrettably with this issue, I cannot recommend this game at all, which saddens me especially as I still haven't actually managed to properly play this classic game. If anyone is able to provide a fix for this, please let me know and hopefully I will be able to update my review. In conclusion; this game was a classic that I still am unable to play properly even after twenty years. As a result I can't even comment on the gameplay, only warn people whom purchase it that they may encounter the severe problem which I have.

This game is effectively the same game as its sequel, just with less content and older graphics, but the content that it has for the campaign is of course unique. Meaning there is still good reason to play this, and very little reason not to. Don't ignore it up because of its simpler looks. It's just as entertaining. The most significant issue is specific to this GOG version. Alt + R changes the game from the pixelated DOS version to a much better looking Windows version, but the game still runs in DOSBox, which has a set speed it runs at for each game that you have to manually adjust by tapping Ctrl + F12 to speed up and Ctrl + F11 to slow down. Since the Windows version is more intensive than the DOS version, it runs slower in DOSBox, so you'll have to manually adjust the speed yourself each time so it doesn't lag. Annoying, but not quite annoying enough to ruin it.

I really like this game, but it's really laggy and so is the audio. Any way to fix?

Dungeon Keeper is a classic game in the unfortunately very thin base building genre. The basic idea is that you build and maintain dungeon, attract monsters to do your bidding and duke it out with the Lord of the Land and any other keeper, all with a good helping of dark humour. If you have played games such as Evil Genius and Startopia, meet their granddaddy. To help you do your bidding you have the imps. Puny, defenseless and beady-eyed, they are your little helpers in running the dungeon. They require neither food, pay nor sleep and they are the only of your creatures who can dig tunnels to expand your dungeon, mine gold and - most importantly - deliver gold to your treasury, as well as sundry upkeep. If they are not up to snuff you can right-click them to give them a slap with your Hand of Evil to give them the proper motivation, at the cost of some of their health. As the only thing an imp can do in battle is to die, you'll need to attract more combat-oriented creatures to your dungeon. Not only do they expect to be paid, but they also require the dungeon to be up to their standard - the bulbous bile demons won't join you unless you have a large hatchery to support their feeding pleasures, and the kinky dark mistresses won't be attracted unless you have a torture chamber to fulfill their... other pleasures. Once you actually have creatures in the dungeon the work is not over. They need to spend time in the training room (costing money) to acquire new abilities and be useful in combat, when they level up they expect to be paid more (do they think you are made of gold?) and all through this you need to keep them happy by making sure that their needs are satisfied - worst come to worst you can drop a sack on gold on them to make them happy. Additionally certain creatures do not get along with each other. A spider will try to pull the wings of every fly it comes across, if you convert a heroes wizard through judicious use of torture expect him and your warlock to have "words", and the ultimate death machine, the Horned Reaper, does not get along with anyone will have to be kept separately. But honestly, why are you still reading this review at this point? Just buy the game already! It's the good Bad choice.
