"Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god." - Jean Rostand Thoughts of a Biologist
You play the role of a military commander hidden deep within an underground bunker. Your mission - to successfully exterminate your enemy's civilian population whilst disabling their ability to attack your own. Start by launching your battleships, submarines, and bombers in order to decimate your opponent's defences. Scramble together your alliances, but remember only one can stand victorious. Prepare your pre-emptive strike before one of your supposed allies get the same idea. Choose the perfect moment for betrayal, obliterating your opponents with an apocalyptic thermonuclear barrage, but get it wrong and their devastating counter attack will bring you to your knees!
DEFCON is a hell of a ride for a strategy games fan. What can be more thrilling that a world-wide, thermonuclear conflict that wipes out all of humanity from the face of the Earth? You start slowly, deploying your forces on international waters, sneaking under the radar. Then, as the DEFCON level changes, players are allowed to use aggressive tactics and even start a conventional war. The conflict is slowly but unavoidably heating up as the game progresses and when it reaches a critical level then the ultimate weapons of mass destruction are unleashed. Let the countdown to extinction begin!
With a large number of game modes for multiplayer, DefCon offers many hours of non-repetitive gameplay.
Stylized graphics inspired by movies such as Wargames and Dr. Strangelove invoke a very engrossing atmosphere.
Easy to learn, hard to master mechanics that you can use to execute countless strategies.
Note: This game may require additional serial key for multiplayer mode. In case it is not automatically generated in your GOG.com library (open it via website → select the game → More → Serial Keys), please reach out to our Support team.
Unfortunatly this game bores me to death. Of course it involves strategy, but in fact it's just waiting until defcon 1, before, well...anything happens. And what happens then is mostly like "Dang, there are submarines, I'm dead. Okay I can fix this. Let me just select these ships and in about 4 Minutes they will arrive. Hopefully." Nice idea, nicely done, boring gameplay.
You know the movie "Dr. Strangelove"? If you like it you will love Defcon. This game is a masterpiece of atmosphere, strategy, simplicity and at the same time full of possible complex decisions. You can be aggressive and bomb the s*** out of your enemies or stay calm and wait for your turn to attack at the best moment. Feel free to be General Turgitson behind his "World Targets in Megadeath" desk. Love it!
As far as I can tell this game doesn't work. After I fiddled with it enough I got it to display fullscreen, and not just one quarter of my screen. However it cannot verify my key, which means I cannot use any online functionality. And when I click on tutorial the whole thing just sits there and does nothing. I found I can drag the bottom border of the popup down to reveal a hidden "close" button that takes me back to the menu.
But so far I haven't gotten this game to work, and I'm getting the impression those who made it shouldn't have built what I assume is their own engine for a simple 2d game. Two stars because I'm forced to select a rating.
Game was released a while ago. Seems multiplayer is offline or everybody's moved on. There is a way to add computer opponents. That's what I played.
The level of micromanagement needed to play this is truly astounding. You get a dozen aircraft carriers, each holding multiple fighters and bombers, and you must launch each aircraft independently. Then you have to click on the next carrier and repeat the process. Adding to this, the battle groups are tight and misclicking is virtually guaranteed. There's a lot of reclicking. I probably did more reclicking than anything else.
Ballistic subs are apparently worthless. They require a long, long time to launch, are surfaced and are vulnerable during this period... they can also be destroyed by a single shot from anything during this. I can safely say 90% of my nukes launched from subs never left the sub.
ICBMs take a very long time to reach their destination and can also be shot down. I decided that tripling or quadrupling up on a target was the only reliable way to hit. Alternatively, the computer opponents all launch at the same time, allied or not, a few minutes into defcon one. Attempting to join them is viable, but boils the game down to a blind-luck gamble. I'd prefer to flip coins or roll dice.
Bombers did the best, if accompanied by a flock of fighters. The fighters don't actually fight anything off, they just draw fire. It's important to note that aircraft have fuel and you can only use half of the visible range (a circle on the screen.) If you overshoot, they crash on the way back. Pure guesswork.
There are zero strategy guides on how to get ahead of the computer as of this writing, using any search engine. I can safely say I firmly, squarely, and completely lost all half dozen games I played. Most games I have zero nukes remaining unfired and they were all simply shot down. I genuinely have no idea how to improve.
I can honestly say I'm very disappointed.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
