You play the role of a military commander hidden deep within an underground bunker. Your mission - to successfully exterminate your enemy's civilian population whilst disabling their ability to attack your own. Start by launching your battleships, submarines, and bombers in order to decimate your opponent's defences. Scramble together your alliances, but remember only one can stand victorious. Prepare your pre-emptive strike before one of your supposed allies get the same idea. Choose the perfect moment for betrayal, obliterating your opponents with an apocalyptic thermonuclear barrage, but get it wrong and their devastating counter attack will bring you to your knees!
DEFCON is a hell of a ride for a strategy games fan. What can be more thrilling that a world-wide, thermonuclear conflict that wipes out all of humanity from the face of the Earth? You start slowly, deploying your forces on international waters, sneaking under the radar. Then, as the DEFCON level changes, players are allowed to use aggressive tactics and even start a conventional war. The conflict is slowly but unavoidably heating up as the game progresses and when it reaches a critical level then the ultimate weapons of mass destruction are unleashed. Let the countdown to extinction begin!

Everything from the manual, to the game menus, the eerie music, and the subtle flashes representing cities of millions of people being bombed, all are unlike anything I've seen in other modern warfare strategy games. Love playing it on a massive monitor and just watching our greatest fears playing out right before my eyes with the haunting music playing. No need for ground-level action when it's this intense from an eye in the sky. World leaders should play a match of this game whenever they start getting ideas (Trump would probably wreck everyone and there would never be any reason to go to real war!)
Playing Defcon really makes you think about the horrors of nuclear war. The soundtrack helps to establish this mood. The graphics are simple yet beautiful, perfectly matching the 80s computer graphics aesthetic they went for. Not for everyone and not always fun, but very distinctive.
I have played few games as addictive as DEFCON, it's just one of those 'one more round' games. Everything about this games is done perfectly, from the foreboding music to the simple yet complex gameplay. Worth every penny.
Ignore the simple graphics, and somewhat more simple gameplay. The music and the feel of the game are just fantastic. It shows how terrible a war like this would be, with each move you make killing millions. Its not preachy either, nor does it flat out point out anything about it. Its a fun game, a good idea, a great feel, and a great time.
