The PS1 version is different than the PC game. I remember finishing this game back in the 90's on PC and it was quite frustrating and a let down that it had nothing to do with the book for the most part. The graphics were pretty blocky like the original Tomb Raider and the gameplay was very similar. There was a bit of tongue and cheek humor in the game which kind of made up for the gameplay but overall I would only recommend this to die-hard Fighting Fantasy fans and even then I have to tell them it really has NOTHING from the book in it.
This one was a heartbreaker for me when I bought it for the PS1 the day it hit store shelves. I had Livingstone's Fighting Fantasy book (a classic) and thought that making a video game based on it was the greatest idea. I paid full price for this title (obviously) and TRIED to like it. The gameplay was horrible, controls were terrible, difficulty was insane, and was just a miserable frustration. Then soon after it's release, in came the scathing reviews (deservedly) and buyers remorse had set in completely. My recommendation is to avoid this stinker and look elsewhere for dungeoning fun.
This is a game stuck in memory as my first PS1 let down. Back in the early days of Playstation, just about that time in my life when games were still bought FOR me (and as a result were a serious, serious investment of money)-I ended up asking for, and getting this disappointment. I remember the hype. I remember the previews. I even had accepted the graphics as decent for the time. What I also remember was the hollow feeling in the pit of my stomach as I realised that I'd busted this year's gift budget on a simply terribly implemented game! Why do I still wear rose-tinted glasses for it then? To be honest, I just don't know-all these years on, I still want it to be better!
Ok, the review proper- gameplay is pretty chunky-characters are not quite tanks, but they lack finesse and moreover, don't stop when you need them to. The learning curve is out the window tough-I thought it was hard back in the day-today it is not easier at all. The enemies are cheap and your reaction speed and hitbox is ridiculous! Sound is-not really present to be poor.
The game has promise-even if the story is shallow, it is based on rich source material-it had all the potential of being a great title, but fell almost at the first hurdle. I still think you should experience the game just once-just to see what can go wrong and how easy other dungeon hack n' slashers are compared to this-but definitely wait for a very good sale!
Although I'm glad to have this game in my collection for personal / nostalgic reasons, trying to relive the experience is painstaking and serves as nothing more than a bad relic of the past. The auto-rotating camera views, tank controls, and poor aesthetic (doors pretty much look like walls, etc) makes for a pretty terrible experience all around. The gravity-defying jumping mechanic also seems a bit misplaced, as it's far too easy to overshoot or undershoot a leap of faith, which usually results in another death.
Still, for nostalgic reasons I love to pull this out and wonder what the devs at the time were even thinking with some of the aforementioned design flaws considered. It almost seems as if they were purposely trying to make an impossibly terrible game, and no amount of control scheme shifting can rectify it.
I played this like crazy back in the day. I was just thinking recently that I'd like to play it again and that was too bad it wasn't on GOG; nice to see it appear!
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
