During an era when dungeon crawls were the rage, this was a game that had a great premise but fell through when it came to the actual implementation. Though the console game seemed okay at the time, the PC platform was well established as the gaming leader, and cross-platform conversions just weren't successful. Nowhere was this more evident than with this unspectacular tribute to a famous RPG adventure series. Glitchy, low poly graphics, poor AI, stock sounds, and terrible gameplay made this game a turd that even the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia are hard-pressed to polish.
I remember getting this game for the Sony Playstation the DAY it was released. At my young inexperienced age I asked my dad to buy this for me, because I liked the cover art. Little did I know what frustrations awaited me. I believe if I were to play this again, now; I would have the patience to play through each area. instead of getting frustrated and entering in passwords to skip to specific stages of the game. The only complaint I really have (outside of the pure challenging grind of trial and error) are the controls. Your character will basically moves like a tank. Think Silent Hill or Tomb Raider for instance. If you are a fan of Ian Livingstone and enjoy action-adventure/rpg's I would throwdown $6 on this game. If you enjoy challenging videogames I would still purchase this game. Just wait for it to go on sale.
Say what you like about Deathtrap Dungeon, but in my book its fun yet clunky ride that retains the sort of atmosphere scarcely found in games of recent. It holds a lot of good memories for myself and anyone that played it all those years ago its worth picking up again, although newcomers might not find it too accessible its definitely worth a few quid
When I first saw this game came out, I ran immediately to my bookshelf. I was in my teens at the time,
and I glared at the book. " Fighting Fantasy: Deathtrap Dungeon " This game is based directly off that.
For those unfamiliar, Fighting Fantasy was like choose your own adventure AND Dungeons and dragons.
You picked where to go, but you solo'd it in a dungeons and dragons manner.
Very cool.
I tried to play the game on that premise, but because i'd have had many runs through, my imagination
had greatly over-exagerated what to expect for this game.
But if you're into dungeon crawlers, puzzles and some old fashioned hack n slash, this is a game you will enjoy.
A very challenging game with some of the most intense dungeons and deadly traps.
Some of this dungeons are very inspired, 'The Pit' that is a descent in to the abyss of darkness 'The Hive' a nest full of mantises, 'Labyrinth' and 'Trench' and many others. They have a catching atmoshpere, with a lot of nice enemies to slay (or to get slayed), there are only two maps that i found heavily poor appealing to me, 'Inversion' and the final dungeon 'Dragon', that doesn't reflect the expectations ('Spire', the first dungeon, is much more a training dungeon, so very moderate in difficulty). Without considering all the long range weapons and magics that you can use to easily progress in the game. Some enemies that seams very hard to get killed are very weak to some particular magic or weapon. This game has almost everything you can ask for a game dungeon considering that this is a 1998 product.
Unfortunately the fact that to survive inside the dungeons you need to be very cautious, has given a bad reputation to this game.
I agree that mastering the controls is not for everybody, and that sometimes in some situations you have to deal with a bad camera angle that don't let you see everything (just press the First Person key, by the way. The dude can also parry and go in first person while he/she is still in the parry mode) but i'm not sure what people means when they say that this title sucks so bad that it should be removed from the history of videogames, because this is a unique title that will never be repeated in other future games. Some say that this is a Tomb Raider clone (maybe derivative) but the only thing that TB and DTD have in common is the game engine (if i'm not wrong) , the same publisher, and a female character (that is like saying that Heavy Metal FAKK is a tomb raider clone because "FEMALES!!!")
CONS: In the 1998 action game stories were weak but i can say that the ending of DTD is just 'pathetic' bacause doesn't make sense (a Diablo 1 cutscene error mby?)
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
