DAYMARE: 1998 is a third-person survival horror with hardcore survival mechanics and hard to kill enemies. It requires a strategical approach to combat and puzzles and offers a multi-character point of view on the story, revealing a deep and obscure lore.
The scene is set with a secret research facility, a deadly chemical weapon and a special security team to investigate this incident with the potential to become much more than just a security breach. Follow the steps of an elite soldier, a helicopter pilot and a forest ranger, as they play out their roles in an event that transforms one peaceful small town into a deadly zone and its citizens into bloodthirsty monsters. Take the creatures down first, before looking for any clues and evidence to bring more sense to the mess. Keep track of your itinerary, as resources are scarce in a situation like this! Anything can happen when your daymares become real…
Fans of the iconic cinematographic brands and classical gloomy survival horror games of the '90s will be thrilled, seeing how DAYMARE: 1998 recreates the atmosphere of the most beloved works from the end of the millennium and places a typical yet fresh story in the middle of it. The plot unfolds through the eyes of various characters, putting players in the shoes of different personalities that will guide them through their theories and doubts about the situation. Backtracking, managing ammo, collecting lore items, solving environmental puzzles and the overall difficulty will help players jump a couple decades back and get chilled to the bone in their first real daymare.
Main features:
Multi-character POV – see the story from different angles and discover the truth
Dreadful enemies – rendered in detail with lifelike animations and dismemberment
Realistic HUD – check inventory, health and position on a special piece of gear
Environmental puzzles – finding your way is not always easy, look for clues
Classic mechanics - limited ammo and save points, backtracking, collectibles, tough enemies and more
Modern graphics and effects – not all is classic thanks to Unreal Engine 4
Experience 90s – homage to the era with tons of references
If you are looking for something new to play, give this game a try. Have a open mind and have fun with it. This game was made by an very small indie team of about 15 people. The game starts off slow and picks up mid way. If you love Resident Evil, you'll enjoy this game. Give it a try!
The game is fun, but the second "mission" is bugged by broken terrain and you cannot get off the dock, Breaking progression and preventing completion of the game. Apparently the Steam version works, but I am not purchasing a second copy of the game.
The game actually becomes enjoyable half way in. It's a shame because most will lose interest before the best parts.
Too much cinematics, that drags on for too long.
Characters that would make the burned dolls faces NPCs of Oblivion looks goods in comparison.
The progression is a bit too linear and I wish we would just be dropped in a big manor/city/lab to explore freely instead of the progression that is a bit too much on rail. When the game actually let you explore freely it's fantastic.
The level design is inegal where so part are a bit empty and other like the town will make you drop your jaw.
I give it 5 stars to encourage the devs on their first game but you should probably get in on discount.
It's an ok game. Corridors could be shorter, maybe less backtracking. But the final boss has you run through a corridor opening doors through QTE and then you have to wait for an elevator. If at any point boss gets you, it's instant death for you. Guess where you start if you die?
I havent played the RE series, but I played Dead Space and Evil Within and I love that stuff.
Played it on the survival horror mode as its meant.
First off - the presentation values. I dont want to say bad, but its kind of close to it. Everything looks fake or like a prop/doll. Animations are rather stuff. Face design looks sloppy and sound design isnt anything special. Im not really hung up on this particular part of games, but I can definitely say its level was no more than baseline.
The story.
You play various characters throughout the game. Government conspiracies, mutagen outbreak. RE stuff as far as I know. Perfectly fine, even if its a rip off. Depends how you present it.
And they didnt present it well. Some character behaviours baffle me. Some story notes require you visit a website IRL. The story doesnt quite make sense and there was supposed to be an unravelling closer to the end, but I only made it somewhere halfway through. You also play as different characters, which doesnt allow you to connect to anyone properly.
Now the gameplay.
Very linear. Rather clunky UI. Amount of damage to kill a zombie can vary greatly, 2-5 headshots with a pistol from experience. You need to go through a tapping minigame if a zombie latches onto you. Many resources you pick up arent particularly useful. Some puzzles are confusing, one actually didnt make sense even after looking up the solution and convinced me to drop this game.
I would give it 2.5 stars, since its not particularly bad, but more like painfully mediocre with some gaffs. There were plenty of 90s references, which was cool.
I do believe the developers put in effort and wanted to make something interesting. But everything they did, and I mean everything, you can find somewhere else better. So unless you are really into the genre and tried everything else it has to offer, there is no point in trying this, sad to say.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
