Darksiders is more than just a "God of War for PC", it has an interesting story and a lot of classic hack'n'slash elements. The puzzles are good (sometimes are kinda tedious), and there are some habilities that you can abuse spamming to kill large groups of enemies (with the Scythe/The Harvester). The final boss is REALLY easy if you took your time and got all the items you could in your run (I confronted him with the complete Abysal Armor). I give it a 4 because the game sometimes feels tedious and slugish, but is generally good.
This game could have been so much better considering the great story and characters. I recognize what at least one reviewer have written here when it comes to broken controls: Time after time during the game I did not understand why I was not able to make a jump for example. Maybe it was neither my keyboard or me after all... To solve puzzles you often need to be psychic and/or have a good memory: Because you might need to have explored the area further on to know what to do. And at least one area is more or less like a labyrinth that you need to go back and forth in. There are no status bars for the enemies, so you never have any idea how far away/close you are to kill enemies. I am thorough when I explore areas, but I STILL did not find more than four parts for the abyssal armor. How to find all ten I have NO idea. You also almost needs to be psychic to kill some of the bosses, because you get little or no indications on how to kill some of the enemies that are invincible except for when killing them in one particular way and/or make them vulnerable by doing something specific first.
A couple of things that REALLY irritates me with this game is that you can save any time. But when you reload you do not find yourself at the time and place where you made the save, but at set waypoints. So if you really struggle with beating a boss you can not just save after a successful period during a fight before a tough sequence and reload if you fail later, no you are forced to watch (parts of) the cut scenes time after time and play through the same battles time after time until you (perhaps) manage to beat the enemy through the WHOLE sequence! There are no indications for where these waypoints are, so when you save, it is a gamble where you actually end up when reloading (luckily the waypoints seems to be closely spaced throughout the game.
For me the replay value is really low for a while: The puzzles and labyrinths makes me not want to play this game again for a while.
I'm loving the game, but sadly I played the second first, like 4 times. So I keep comparing both the games, and the second is way better IMHO... still, this is a great game. Sadly the cinematics are not playing on my machine, but I don't mind that much. Everything else works, so I guess they patched this some time ago for the problems other reported.
I've beaten Castlevania Lords of Shadows some years ago. First it was difficult but it gave you a fair chance to master its mechanics. I always had an idea, why I failed.
Now to Darksiders warmastered edition. Here I fail because even though I press the button, the Quicktime event doesn't happen (Tiamat). Add to that the annoying aiming in the first place and I'm out.
With decent controls I'd given 3 to 4 stars:
- Atmosphere is fine, even though I got a feeling that with this scenario much more would have been possible. For me in terms of atmosphere it loses against Castlevania or most of the Legacy of Cain series. I know that I have only seen little of the world. It has been fine and all but not one single 'wow, this is great' moment. Even the supposedly badass moments feel rather cheap to me.
- appart from the broken controls the menu navigation feels clumsy. Just like a bad console port.
- I like the worlds with all its secrets and it feeld earned most of the time, when you succeed.
- It runs smooth on my HD 530 with decent enough visuals.
My recommendation:
Since there aren't that may games for PC in this genre and many people seem to enjoy it, try it out when it's on sale, so it won't hurt if you'd have wasted your money
