Ambitious but indecisive

Brutal Legend can't decide what kind of game it is. Is it strategy? Is it action? Is it roleplaying? Or does none of this matter because the story's what's important? It aims for all four, and ends up being deeply frustrating, because when it's good it's SO good, but when it's bad it's heartbreaking. Ultimately I can't recommend the game because it's good or it's fun - but I CAN recommend it because it's Brutal Legend, and there's nothing else like it. Its mad heavy-metal-does-Game-of-Thrones premise and aesthetic are unforgettable. Jack Black is perfect as Eddie. The classic metal soundtrack is impeccable, and well used - the Mr Crowley scene remains a favourite years after playing it. If the game's imperfect, it's not because it wasn't aiming for the stars, and that ambition is worth seeing all by itself.

A great game.. with one major flaw.

The open world format this game has has always been great. The music.. oh man.. the music.. just too many classics. The subtle poke toward rock history and the legends of rock being used as the voice actors all great. The one and only one drawback is the whole stage show battles. These battles could have been done a completely different way and I feel it would have made the game one of the best under-rated games ever. But the story-line, while short, is amazingly well done and exploring to get a full clear is always fun as well. Definitely one to pick up if you are a metal fan, or just like Jack Black and Kage. (Or Ozzy, Rob Halford, Lemmy, Tim Curry.. etc...)

Then this game is for you. Awesome open world with tons of content, great storyline, great metal music and voice acting, great game period.

Awesome setting, but gets repetitive

Another one of those games that have "Tim Schafer" written all over it! Unfortunately also on the negative side. Double Fine churns out awesome ideas in the dozen, but they always lack that bit of polish to turn them into really awesome games. In this case, that's noticeable by the game getting a bit repetitive towards the end, and when the last tower-defence-style battle is over, you'll likely let out a "finally!", because that element of the game feels a bit half-assed almost from the beginning. But, apart from that, I can only recommend it. Awesome setting, atmosphere and characters, a Tim Schafer story and fun gameplay.
