Experience builds character

Blood is infamous for its difficulty which will reward memorisation of stage layouts and enemy placements. That's to its detriment for the most part because it draws difficulty mostly from cheap traps and deadly accurate hits can enemies, and really destroys the pacing of the first play through. Expect to claw your way into this game by save scumming. I say for the most part because the high difficulty makes repeat play more engaging than it would otherwise be. However, Blood is hardly lacking in reasons to replay. Weapons are varied and satisfying to use, very powerful, and unique amongst FPS games. Enemies have similarly hilarious grunts to Duke Nukem 3D, and sprites animate their demises satisfyingly too. Movement is fairly fast as you might expect from its pedigree, allowing one to re-enact their favourite John Woo action scene within constraints. The music compose for this game is good, but not plentiful enough for the number of levels, so it gets repetitive during the campaign. Also play with the midi soundtrack instead of the CD one.

Blood is back with an amazing remaster

Blood is in my top 10 games of all time and with this new remaster by the legends at Nightdive it can be more accesible and be played by the youth of today. When I first played this game I didn't think much of it and thought it was too challenging. But when I replayed it it finally showed me all of its glory. Blood has some of the funnest and challenging gameplay I have played in any game. I like challenging games as long as they are fun (Hotline Miami, Katana Zero, etc.) and this game sure delivers. Its great to play and the new controls are great. The story is simple. You play as Caleb, a former cult member who was betrayed by the leader. His friends were taken by various different monsters and he must kill them. Its got a good story, and I like how Caleb isn't the basic hero. He is both a villain and a hero. The graphics look even better because of the remaster and it looks great. It has the same charm the build engine games had but with real 3D. The music in Blood enhances the experience. The music is all amazing and its great to hear. Though it seems hard at the start, it gets better as you get better and keep playing tldr: Blood is amazing and has challenging but awarding gameplay.

Great Remaster, Despite a Few Issues

Let's get this out of the way right now. If you're keyboard and mouse gamer, this version play's so much better than the original version. In the DOS version, if you try to aim with the mouse, it would feel somewhat weird since it seems like that version can only read one axis movement at a time. Thankfully, this version doesn't have that problem. For gamepad (read Xbox 360/ Xbox One controller) users, such as myself, you want to customize your controls as the defaults are a bit strange to say the least, such as using the Y button to crouch. Also, it is impossible to save your game with solely the gamepad as you'll need to type a name for your save file. Hopefully the devs will allow an option to work around this. At least you can map quick save to a button, just make sure to not map it to the A, B, or dpad buttons. Outside of those caveats, the game plays great with a gamepad. If you prefer using a dinput controller (pc controllers made before Xbox controllers), the game technically supports dinput, but you will have to edit the .cfg file for the menu commands for menu navigation. I suggest looking up this game's PC Gaming Wiki page for more information on that. Even the display options were nicely touched up with things like borderless window mode, multi-monitor support, and different rendering options. One other issue I do have with the game is that since the game saves into your profile folder (the DOS version saved in the game's directory), it will usually take up to 30 seconds to save. Do keep in mind that I use an SSD as a boot drive, and a HDD for game storage. Also, it is a bit prone to crashing. I'm not sure how frequent the issue is, but I suggest that you look on various forums about what is causing the crashes and how frequent they are before purchasing the game. Hopefully, NightDive can iron out the issues, as most of the game is better than ever. I wouldn't mind these guy remastering Shogo or Blood 2 next.

I play. Again.

Very nice refresh of the old game. Original version was ok, but controls were not that great, you had to spend some time with setting to make mouse look working properly. This version adds normal controls, antialising, and it's still that good old game we all love.

Overhaul Makes The Game New Again.

Well this was a nice surprise. Am getting 60FPS, my mouse now works like it should without having to play with the x, y, access and bindings, which was a real annoyance once, and the game just feels like Im playing it again for the first time. This was a nice redo on the game and it was about time since Duke has had a 32bit mod for ages now. Just need one for Redneck Rampage and life will be really sweet.
